Only real way is whip the diff cover off, I alone have done allot of conversions so there must be hundreds out there which bear no reference to what the numbers say

That's a 4.06 final drive, and from your description sounds like a BE1 gearbox. 4.06 would likely be a 1.6 GTi gearbox if it's originally 205 origin.

It came in the boot of a 1.6 gti i bought, the car was a phase 2 but the bloke through in a gearbox, engine and a load of mk1 trim, he used to rally them apparently, so i think he put the phase 2 engine in the phase 1 gti he had.

So your theorys of it being a phase one box make sense!

Looks like i'll be using my old turbo diesel XU7DT box, ive been told the final drive should be 3.69, just wondering if anyone knows the final drive of a XU9DT box?

My xud7t had a 3.47 fd iirc, approx 25mph/1krpm in fifth iirc (75 @ 3k) but I tried one off an XUD7 & that was slightly lower so maybe 3.69.

Have a look on service box & see what fd ratio's it lists for the 306 D turbo.

Graham.

Once i remove it i'll check the crown wheel.
