Gti6 Ignition Live

Recommended Posts

Right o, was rather hoping I wouldn't need your help!

this is my setup, 205gti dash loom (from clocks to fuse box) 205gti engine loom and a 306gti loom converted by spikey.

I have plugged it all in and rather hoped it would jump into life. I'v wired in the constant 12v for the loom but get nothing when I turn the key, no power to the inside of the car. It looks like I'm missing my ignition live, which is the red and yellow (heavy wires) from the ignition to the fuse box, no sure were it goes after that?

I'm a complete wiring retard and it feels like I'm missing something obvious.

Thanks in advance, Ali :)

(why did I do a TU-XU conversion! <_<)

Sounds like the shunt box isnt connected.

It's the black L shaped box that has a few connectors and fuses on it.

Normally located behind the passenger headlight

Your quite right that isn't connected, I though that was to do with the the fans?

The shunt box provides power to everything except for the starter and alternator feeds - if that's not connected, you'll have absolutely nothing.

is that connected direct to the battery? I remember taking the black box from the stdt with the twin fan set up.

The relay box on an STDT is something else entirely. The shunt box is connected direct to the battery, about the size of a ciggie packet

Do the headlights, clock, interior light etc work? If they do, it's not an issue with the shunt box not being connected.

Perfect! I'v got all the relays for the twin fans but I also got the shunt box with the two terminals ontop, thanks all.

Ongoing fun! Got the ignition live all sorted so lights horn dash lights etc work, but when I turn to stage 2 of the barrel it starts turning over, I'v traced this to one of the heavy red wires from the barrell that has constant live!? The fuel pump is not getting power either, not sure if the two are connected some how.

I'v wired the pump directly into the multi plug were spikey had labelled it for me but its not getting power.

Any ideas before I return after lunch!?

Sounds like you (or whoever did the loom) has wired the ignition and starter wires round the wrong way on the two brown multiplugs - they were swapped between Phase 1.5 and Phase 2 cars, so typically people read a wiring guide for one age of car and then replicate that on their different aged car only to get the symptoms that you're experiencing. Swap the red (2A) and blue (46) wires over and all will probably be well.

Is there anything you can't do Anthony! I'll go back and give that a try, and no doubt be back this evening with some more troubles.

I had the above problem with Spiky's loom, permanent live and switched live around the wrong way due to the changes in phases. Nothing wrong with Spiky's loom.

No, nothing wrong with spik's loom at all, I was very impressed and pleased with it infact. Well I swapped them over and it lives! First in about a year that engine has ran I think (Anthony can confirm) Put the coolant system on and the thermostat take off elbow thing decided to fall apart! So off to get another tonight.

Not run it up for more than a couple a mins but its sounding gooooooood!!!! :) :) :)

Not far off a year - the engine last ran on 20th June 2010 and was removed later that day from the Xsara donor :)

You enjoy your conversation with Nigel!! I plan to take up and down the track tomorrow, MOT next week as I'v got to go back to Weymouth to work Sat-Tues on the beach (its a hard life!)

I want to get some under it before I take it to Weymouth though, just in case. Engine is super sweet, tapped to start with and I shat my pants but cleared when the oil got round. I was on the verge of phoning you yesturday/today but all is well now.
