Dwindling Numbers...

Recommended Posts

Ryan

I emailed the address at the bottom of the spreadsheet and asked if they had the figures by engine size. They didn't, but they did send me the number of GTIs left according to year of first registration:

84 = 9

85 = 17

86 = 60

87 = 187

88 = 297

89 = 520

90 = 585

91 = 521

92 = 228

93 = 102

94 = 3

95 = 2

Excellent, thanks for that Ryan :)

I didn't realise that there were any '95 registered GTi's out there though!

All the DVLA's data is so full of typos and mistakes that I wouldn't take the figures as gospel. There were some later ones listed too, but aside from maybe the odd import I'm guessing they're all typos for "206":

97 = 1

98 = 3

99 = 2

01 = 1

05 = 1

07 = 1

08 = 1

09 = 2

10 = 1

The value will increase and indeed is doing so already.

Perhaps it's just me, but I'm not entirely convinced that values going through the roof is a good thing, even if you do own one.

Availablity of many (8v) engine and drivetrain parts shouldn't be too much of an issue for quite some time as they were shared with many other PSA models, and in your gearbox example, they're generally pretty hardy and not an especially common failure item like they are on say TU engined models with chocolate MA 'boxes. The main issue in my opinion will be 205 speciific parts, and especially things like interior trim and body panels, and specific parts for less common engines like Mi16's - indeed, some parts already are difficult to obtain.

Praise the lord - I have been redeemed.. I've been banging on about trim and covers for nearly 12 months now. I've just been ignored for my efforts. Just remember who is doing his best about this, think about how you are going to go about replacing your seat covers (and your broken bolsters!) and then remember the name - Dave Hickman - 205 GTI covers and trim. You know I'm right ;)

wicked.

Dave

Not wanting to derail this thread too much, but I hardly think that you've been ignored - from what I recall there's a long thread with much praise for your persistance and dedication, and I've little doubt that as time goes on and supply of original parts dries up, more and more people will turn to people and small companies like yourself.

At the moment the majority of 205 seats are still easily enough available, although some like 205 Rallye cloth seats are getting very difficult to obtain in good condition - once that's the case, people will be turning to you to obtain replacements, especially as like with other classics, more and more people will want them to be returned to standard and hence just putting in a set of Phase 2 half-leathers - as many probably do now - won't suffice.

For the moment, parts supply for the most part isn't an issue as there's still a reasonable supply of cars being broken for parts, and there's plenty of people that have hoarded parts over the years and are slowly selling them on. In a few years when cars aren't getting broken and those stashes of parts have been exhausted, then that's when the issues will start and individuals like you will be a lifeline to the 205 community.

Don't get downbeat and keep with what you're doing and it will pay off :)

Would be interesting to compare these to the yearly sales fiqures if anyone has them.

Hear hear!

I've had multiple 205's and broken the odd couple a year as a hobby for over ten years now, so have naturally seen the demand change massively.

It started out of a hobby and then subsequently necessity, needing parts for my own cars or because they were damaged/rusted away/stolen & recovered/not fit for the road etc and hence made sense, but i never sold anything really, hoarding it all for my own personal use, bar a few friends within the same circles!

It's only really in the last 5 years or so that i've sold anything as my stores are bursting at the seams, having multiples of spares to the point of exceeding storage space is silly, plus i love the thought of helping to keep many other 205's on the road and of course as a result, their owners happy! Hence have become a known supplier of good used parts (i hope!) and i'm sure will continue to be so for the foreseeable future!!

But! There will be a time as said that this stuff dries up and then where will we be? - Hopefully going to remanufacturers like yourself Dave! As IMO, akin to other appreciated cars that become classics over time, there will be specialists around that are able to cater for us, hopefully! It's just a matter of time.

If there is only 187 1987 gtis left my stage rally car must be one as its taxed, i'd better look after it. I killed the other Gti i had, that was an 87 too :)

I won't A, but the thread has been led by me. If all I wanted was praise - this is the wrong forum for that one.

I am concerned about the future of these great little cars ( and I've driven a few)

there seem to be various strategies being adopted by members and I don't think it will end up with a smiley face all round.

rant over.

PS taxed and driven daily :ph34r:

Ouch, 4 AX GT 500s left, 131 AX GTs. 72 of the Metro GTi. 3 x XR2, which I guess is the mk1 :(

Although there are 2649 people driving round hoping that one day they can flash the exact same car coming towards them. Sadly, that day won't come for them.

Easier perhaps, but the facts are still there. We really need to look after these cars.

Lets look a bit closer though, there's far more 205 gti's than there is than pretty much all other 80's/90s hot hatches.

Don't panic about the 309s! With people doing them up to this standard I'm sure some will be around forever-
