Assorted Running Issues

Hi all,

1990 1.6 CTi

Loving it generally but it's sick and I think it deserves a bit of time and money lavished on it hence this thread.

Firstly, the fuel economy is horrendous, £30 on motorway/A-Road driving got me ~100 miles - that's not right is it? £20 has got me 60 or so miles since then. There's obviously something wrong somewhere.

Secondly it's got an erratic idle when cold, hunts between 850rpm and 1350rpm or so, this used to settle down to a steady idle which was a little high at 1100rpm but now it hunts to a lesser degree when warm too.

Thirdly it cuts out when you depress the clutch, when warm, going into a tight turn for instance which can be an arse as it's got power steering.

It does burn a bit of oil and the end of the exhaust is very sooty. I've not been in for a proper looksee yet but is there anything which jumps out as obviously tieing all these symptoms together? Economy is a priority as it's costing me a fortune currently!

Also, I'd quite like a 205 specialist/marque expert to have a full look over and tell me what's wrong with it overall so I can plan nursing it back to health. Does anyone know anyone who would do this in the Berkshire area? Obviously everyone's time is worth money so not looking for a freebie.

Thanks for any assistance anyone can provide.
