I would take it for a drive before getting to concerned, I had this on my first 306 gti6, I had it in the paint shop for a week and when i went to start it to bring it home it was tapping really bad, this was before (tapper) was a known issue, it wouldn't go away sat still but after about 20 mins of driving at varied revs it went away never to return.

We also had a Vauxhall vectra in work that tapped it's tits off really bad no matter how long it was left idling for, it was a trade in that had sat about for a few months just started, driven to the wash bay and parked up again, when it went for an mot it came back sounding sweet as a nut, no tapping at all, apartly it just shut up after about 5 miles.

See how it goes then mate.

Could need a good blast to free up the tappets?

Mines always tapped but its not bothered me, I should imagine it will end up getting replaced at some point in the near future anyway .

As Matt said, give it a drive as often enough you'll never get the oil pressure up just revving it.

Take it for a ride.

My GTI6 decided to spill all of its oil onto the Autobahn last December due to a damaged oil filter seal.

When I parked it at the office (presumably on its last few millimeters of oil), I had exactly the same noise as in your video.

As I didn't now about the cause of the leak, the car was brought home on the back of an AA truck.

A new oil filter stopped it from spilling the fresh oil, but the noise stayed and I was pretty sad, especially as I feared that the lack of oil had caused bearing damage.

In order to find out if the noise had some effect on the engine's usability, I took the car for a careful spin round town.

It took some 9 kilometers until the noise suddenly disappeared. It did not come back ever since.

Damien, that is bad news indeed and I can understand your pain after my original GTi6 conversion I had turned out to be a duff engine provided and badly fitted. I had mine rebuilt in the end as I just didn't want to just another engine. Thankfully it paid off, but it was costly.

Fingers crossed for you that a good run will loosen up the engine after having it sat around for a while.

abit of a update.......

the driveshafts were fitted but after putting some oil in i found out one of the seals were leaking.

http://img194.imageshack.us/img194/5765/dscf4675z.jpg

so i got some new ones ones off the forum

http://img607.imageshack.us/img607/5460/dscf4690r.jpg

much to my dissapointment i had to mount the old washer bottle in its old place.

http://img41.imageshack.us/img41/8411/dscf4682n.jpg

there is just a lack of space where i wanted to put it.

http://img207.imageshack.us/img207/2140/dscf4688m.jpg

also got a battery tray lid sorted.

http://img69.imageshack.us/img69/6910/dscf4683p.jpg

the fuel pump relay was clicking itself on/off when ever i had the battery connected, after having a look i found it to be alittle worse for ware.

http://img717.imageshack.us/img717/6624/dscf4680m.jpg

and the replacment. (again off the forum :) )

http://img189.imageshack.us/img189/5392/dscf4681f.jpg

the aux belt some how started to eat itself, i think the 205 one was too small so it was over strecking.

http://img259.imageshack.us/img259/1467/dscf4677c.jpg

now on a look out for one for a 306 rallye.

got the rad and fan housing cut and fitted.

http://img256.imageshack.us/img256/7842/dscf4678e.jpg

loads of clearence from the inlet manifold, after abit of cutting.

http://img708.imageshack.us/img708/4576/dscf4679r.jpg

got the slam pannel on and the bonnet catch sorted.

http://img513.imageshack.us/img513/1691/dscf4684.jpg

again loads of room from the inlet after some trimming.

http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/1046/dscf4685y.jpg

bonnet close

http://img402.imageshack.us/img402/9467/dscf4687cu.jpg

grill on

http://img684.imageshack.us/img684/3592/dscf4686p.jpg

need to now fit the new drive shaft seals, sort out a aux belt and some how find somewere to put a air filter, as there is a lack of space even with the top hose for the rad not connected.

Did you crank it over first a good few times to circulate the oil before starting it for the first time in a while?

to be fair nope, i filled the oil filter with oil when i fitted it and turned it by hand afew times.

it was abit of a suprise when i turned the key and it started, i was half expecting it to take afew turns before firing up.

good to see you havent given up mate, bit of a break does you good eh.

what oil seal was leaking? i had a spare one here from when i bought a pair you should have said :(

get the beast back together and blast it until it either runs well or dies.

it was the bigger oil seal, they where both new, i must of bashed it or something when i fitted the driveshafts.

not to worry its just a pig pulling the wishbone from the hub to remove the shaft.

if it runs, great but if it dies :(

ive never done/tryed anything like this before and much to my suprise ive really injoyed doing it all and i would love to do it all again

its just a pig pulling the wishbone from the hub to remove the shaft.

Pop a bar in between the bone and subframe (through from the top) and lever down to pop the BJ.

You can actually get away with removing the shafts without undoing the bottom ballpoint.

got the new driveshaft seals fitted and put her outside.

the clutch seems abit high, all the gears work/feel fine.

i had a noise under her when she was running to check the exhaust, i spotted that the rear beam was shot to bits. even jumping up and down in the boot wasnt giveing any movment. bit of a bummer as it was a recon beam about 5 years ago.

also the rear brakes pass it but thats just from sitting for so long.

i found abit of rust popping up around the tailgate by the window seal, i guess some water got in there sometime ago.

when letting the engine warm up i found a leak in the rad, it seems to be comming from the top were the top hose joins the rad so i will need to get a new one.

whats left....

lambda, air filter, aux belt, the nocking, brakes, rear beam......

also sounds more like a knocking than a tapping

also i started it up again today and it sounds different, very winny

first vid, might be an epic tapper, bottom ends tend to come and go with revs, not making noise on steady revs.

hard to tell with the low quality, but It sounds like a timing or auxillary belt too tight in the second video.

Sounds bad in both, First one sounds more bottom end, second as WP sounds like a tight belt

im not running a aux belt at the moment so it must be the cambelt.

not good then.

best to stop what im doing then and get another engine :(

no point in waisting time/money on it

Before you throw the towel in or spend out for another engine, loosen off the timing belt a bit and see if it improves.
