Do I Really Need An Oil Cooler?

Recommended Posts

dave205

This may seem like a stupid question but here goes:

Whilest re-building my 2.0 8v turbo engine for my 205, i aquired a 13 row mocal oil cooler, (oil over air), the engine as standard, as most of you probly already know, comes with a oil over water sandwhich plate, and is piped up accoudingly.

The question is, do i really need an oil cooler, the car will be prodominatly a road car, and the occasional track day.

Let me know thoughts and thanks in advance.

Dave

My oil rarely gets hot enough on the road. Not sure how the turbo will effect things though.

If you're going to drive it in anger, then yes. If it's just a shopping trolley, then no.

driving fast around town. still probably wont need an oil cooler,

you need to monitor your temps (accuratly) first,

else it's just an expense you dont need :D

and using the gauge in the car isnt accurate :D

the std heat exchanger will be fine for fast road use :D

I would have thought that the temps will rise so fast (under track conditions with a turbo) that you won't be able to monitor them. For the sake of a few hundred dollars I'd take the insurance policy rather than the risk.

i used to own a 350bhp road going cossie and a 350bph escort rally car

neither of them needed a oil cooler,

they had std oe heat exhangers.

oil wont rise "that" quick, it will just rise with the prolonged flat out, which you cant really do on the road,

so it's not really an issue, and it wont rise so fast you wont see it, it will be graduale

Thinking about it anyway, even if i take it on a track day, ist not as if your ploughing round and round for hour after hour on the circuit, you have your time slot, then its park up and wait for the next one, so it's not like it won't have time to cool.

If you do track days and drive at any kind of pace you will need an oil cooler.
