Clio Cruise Control Stuck

Sounds like a definite fault with the person operating the vehicle to me...... dip clutch, engine clatters off limiter and you brake to a halt and turn it off....

Very much like the USA Toyota problems, where the throttle stuck open. One family had time to phone the police to report what was happening before they crashed into a shopping centre. When they were grilling some Toyota Representitive on a news report, he suggested if it happened people could either take the vehicle out of gear or just switch off the engine!

Exactly.

Whilst there may or may not have been a fault, it's hardly rocket science to dip the clutch, kill the ignition, press the cruise-control button or even stand on the brakes - despite what is implied in that thread, the brakes will *easily* slow the car even at full throttle, the problem only coming if you continuously drag them to maintain speed.

Hell, I know that I've had throttle jam open on me before in various cars, and after an initial moment of "WTF?!" when you take your foot off the loud pedal and the car carries on accelerating, you just instinctly react and address the issue - brake, clutch, ignition. Maybe I should have just covered my eyes, ploughed into a bus stop full of people, and then sued the manufacturer?

Now, if it was a diesel automatic that had runaway on its own oil I might have had a little sympathy, but frankly all that thread highlights to me is that people are stupid <_<

Ditto, if he dipped the clutch there would be no problem but he said he tried to deactivate it with the CC button and braking both of which should have dis-engaged the CC (unless of course he is lying).

Like wasn't paying attention and ploughed into the lorry, looking for a suitable thing to blame!

Reminds me of this..

A motorist drove for 60 miles at speeds of 135mph after the accelerator on his BMW car jammed and his brakes failed.

Kevin Nicolle, 26, was on the A1 near Thirsk in North Yorkshire when the car started to accelerate.

"I was in tears most of the time on the phone to the police - I really could see myself dying," he told the BBC.

He had to drive on the hard shoulder to avoid crashing but eventually lost control and hit a roundabout near Blyth, Notts, but escaped unhurt.

Speaking to BBC Five Live about the incident on 5 March Mr Nicolle said: "I was travelling down the motorway and I came to traffic in front of me.

"I took my foot off the accelerator because it's automatic - but I wasn't slowing down at all.

"I hit the brakes. They were braking ok, they were keeping me at about 70mph.

"So I phoned up the police after I called the AA and they said straight away 'stick your hazard lights on and headlights on - we've got a helicopter en route to you'."

Police patrol cars were also sent but struggled to catch up with the BMW 318.

'Survived accident'

Mr Nicolle said: "Then the brakes started burning out - I could see smoke coming from the brakes."

He tried to put the car into neutral but the gears were jammed.

Mr Nicolle was in constant contact with the police on a hands-free phone.

As he approached Blyth he saw a sign for a roundabout.

"There was a load of cars parked waiting to go onto the roundabout, so I went on the inside on the hard shoulder to try to get around it.

But doing that sort of speed there was no chance and I hit the roundabout head on.

"I remember the 999 lady saying 'he's crashed'.

"I survived the accident but I thought I was going to die in the fire."

But miraculously he walked away completely unhurt - and said he is now considering giving up driving for good.

Mr Nicolle said the police took the car away for tests and BMW said they would carry out a full investigation.

BMW's UK media relations manager, Duncan Forrester, said: "I would certainly like to reassure anybody driving any BMW that we see this as really nothing more than a freak accident.

"We have absolutely no record of anything such as this happening in the past, hence the reason why we want to take a close look at it."

The R reg car had 107,000 miles on the clock and had three months remaining on the MOT.

A DRIVER who claimed his accelerator jammed for 60 miles at up to 140mph had NOTHING wrong with his car, BMW insisted yesterday.

Kevin Nicolle, 25, said he wrestled to control his motor on the A1 through Yorks and Notts, screaming, “I’m going to die”.

But its makers, who inspected the 1998 BMW 318 together with cops, said: “There is no fault that could have contributed to his actions.”

A motorist who said he drove for 60 miles at speeds of up to 130mph after the accelerator on his BMW car jammed has been arrested.

Kevin Nicolle, 26, of Southsea, Hampshire, was travelling down the A1 before he crashed into a roundabout at Blyth, Nottinghamshire, in March.

He later blamed the high speed ride on a mechanical fault.

Police confirmed Mr Nicolle was arrested on 24 May on suspicion of dangerous driving and later bailed.

The lorry driver had said he began to panic when its brakes started to fail and he was unable to put the automatic BMW 318 car in neutral.

He said he decided against turning off the engine for fear the steering would lock.

Reminds me of this..

Seen a BMW crash under those conditions with my own eyes. Driver lost control of car, wouldn't do anything apparently. Came off M4 onto services sliproad (the near hungerford I think, Reading bound) at motorway speed and ploughed through various parked cars, which created a domino effect in the carpark. It was total carnage. I've a picture of it somewhere.
