Recommended Posts

Hi there

i have been building a s16 supercharged engine for my 205 it is all in and almost complete it has forged pistons and everything is new apart from the cams, i am not sure what oil i should be using on first start up and to run in the engine in. and also how i go about running it in, it will be put on rolling road for first start up to map it as im running mbe management. any help or advise would be great?

Matt

Turn it over a few times with the fuel pump fuse out just to build up some oil pressure and move the oil about. I read up all sorts of different things but in the end went for what it always runs on. For me that's 15w 50 Mobil 1. Mines turbo'd on bodies albeit mi16 not s16. Tom

Various trains of thought exist regarding oil choice for the run in period, do a google search, pick your preference after having a read and go for it.

I use Royal Purple XPR51 20W50 on a fully run in charged GTI-6.

Personal method is to use the cheapest engine oil you can get first off. This is needed to let the rings bed into the bores. If you use fully synthetic this will not happen properly, case in point is some early Ford Focuses that were filled with fully synth from the word go and consequently use lots of oil as the rings did not bed properly.

The cheap oil is fine as it will allow the rings to bed, and at that time you are only driving the thing gently anyway, so there is no detriment to bearings, camshafts etc.

Change the oil at 100 miles, carry on driving, change again at 250 and 500. Then put something decent in and get it to the rolling road to be set up.

That is what I do anyhow.

Im not sure of the reasons or why, but im sure the first few ( or perhaps during the entire time ) you want an oil with higher zinc levels to stick or treat the metal? Hopefully PeterT will comment on that...

Oils no longer have zinc (or very little). Zinc is necessary to cushion a new cam lobe on a new lifter until they are run in. Thus use something like Crane Break-In Lube (or similar) during assembly and pour the rest of the bottle over the cams before start up. Still use a cheap oil like Tom suggests, ie NOT a friction modified oil, then switch to synthetic as normal.

In this case, the cams aren't new, so unnecessary.

I've found it less of a problem with 16V engines, but 8V cams are very soft and suffer badly from the problem. Especially new cams on second hand buckets.
