205 Cti Project

Recommended Posts

laser green 1.9

Just won a cti on ebay with a suspected head problem, should keep me busy for a bit. I may been asking for some advice, as I've never had a head off before.

I'm also in the middle of a CTi rebuild. If I were you I would check over everything as my one was sold with a MOT which probably wasn't worth the paper it was written on. The rear brakes were binding, loads of rubber bellows shot and the suspension felt dodgy as well. Eventually took it off the road having driven it and got annoyed for a year. Luckily I managed to pick up another Gti which yielded a good number of parts and I have been transferring them across bit by bit. Problem is, if your parts car is half decent in terms of the parts condition, you'll want to transfer over eveything and before you know it, the CTi will have been off the road for 2 years - like mine has and now I'm desparately trying to complete it before the summer is all but gone!!

So far I've changed the rear beam, both front struts, both driveshafts, cambelt, rear brakes and seats and there's still loads to do. I just want to drive it now. If you get a Gti rather than another CTi, you can change over the subframes and get rid of the awful CTi suspension by fitting the much better GTi setup, as I plan to do.

The final problem is where to store all the parts. I have lock-ups everywhere and still store some at home - much to my wife's dismay.

Happy hunting - there are loads of parts cars out there.

It's a nightmare isn't it? You have the best intentions of getting a couple of jobs done just to get it going again. Then, one thing leads to another and you feel guilty about doing the minimum and so before you know it you've dismantled more than you realised. I like to put it down to being a perfectionist and wanting to put right the bodge that the previous owner of my car left me. Thing is, by the time I get mine back together, my family would have lost interest in it, not to mention how much it's costing me to put right!!!! I'm sure it'll be worth it.....

Get it running. Enjoy it, decide what bits bug you and fix those and then enjoy it some more and then consider paint. Most 205's if taken apart end up as bits on eBay.

I ran my CTI, rebuilt rear beam, turbo'd it, ran it some more, painted it, ran it some more. Most CTi's are dismantled because of the hood condition and a tatty interior. There are a lot of projects about and very few on the road.

Just picked her up today, drove ok and didn't over heat. Yet to see any signs of a head gasket failure, it didn't use any water on the journey. Yet to see any mayo in the expansion bottle, oil filler pipes or on the dip stick. It should be a bit of summer fun any way.

I'd recommend one of the Air deflectors in the back if you don't have anyone in the back, Makes the drive with the roof down so much better

Might get my other one out in a few years

What do air deflectors look like?

I did a bit more body work prepping on mine again last night. just need to rub down the drivers footwell, one door and sill then I'm contacting a painter.

I'm hoping the prepwork I've done will bring the price down a bit as I don't want to spend more than £1000 on bodywork really.

Theres a bit of welding to be done at the front to fit new headlight mounting brackets. they're in place with the old ones removed.

The whole car is (will be) prepped using thinners, then 320-600 then 800 grade. The inside arches have been scrubbed clean.

There's a few dents and ripples to sort, but nothing major. And I'm wanting everything painting except the underside (under floor and boot floor)

Do you think it's reasonable at under £1000?

Also the car is stripped bare exept the windscreen.

Sorry for the hijack, but this seems to be a bit of a CTI thread.

Also I was given a frame for the roof, but it looks different to the one on I removed, mainly noticable is it dosen't have any gas struts on it.

Is that a newer design or is it for a powered hood?
