Yes you can! What are the last 2 digits on the number plate? I traced mine back to Maidstone in Kent. :D

Someone on here has done this before. Once they found out the name of the supplying dealer (no longer in business), they contacted the local paper and asked them to search their archives for any ad they may have featured at the time. The ad featured the garage's logo and from this, we designed the sticker and reg plate.

Can't find the reg plate, but it went something like this:

I have a list of them in my 205 handbooks that came with my GTI.

Cowies of Middlesborough, Longlands Road, TS3 8DT, 0642 242873.

Hope this helps!

I'm not entirely sure that can always be relied upon as being accurate - one of my 205's I know was originally supplied by a Scottish dealer, yet the numberplate (the same as it was supplied on) comes back as Middleborough. Probably a good reason for it, such as being part of a batch of cars bought centrally, registered, and then shipped to the local dealer for PDI and delivery given that I believe it was a company car originally, but it's a good example of why not to put complete trust in the numberplate alone pointing you to the area of the original supplying dealer.

My other cars do appear to tie up with what I know of their history though

If a car's had a private plate on it they don't always get the same one back, so might not be bullet-proof.

And I guess without a proper documented history it'd be hard to know
