An XS engine has an alloy block and 85hp from the factory, it is much lighter and has more grunt than your iron block. iirc it is the same tu fitted in the rallyes.

Gti subframe and wishbones / arb is a cheap suspension upgrade, if you are staying with a Tu engine then you will need to move the gear linkage mounting point on the subframe.

1.6 gti beam will fit on easily and will give you thicker arb and torsion bars on the rear, along with bigger drums and will help stop the rubbing on the rear

1.9 calipers will fit directly onto your front hubs, along with 1.9 disks.

If i where you, i would fit the xs engine and gearbox, and run on gti suspension. see how that goes for you, as gti shocks / springs are stiffer than normal CJ ones, together with gti beam and gti subframe it will transform the car. a good xs engine is not far off a 1.6 gti imho. and should connect up and run with what you have already. they can bequite cheap also, 60mm is too low, 30/40mm is about right for road cars, anything lower on standard components is just going to cause you problems.

all the parts i have listed can be gotten hold of quite cheap seccond hand, and most are readily available on here ;)

Had a disaster with the boot lid as well just after i had finished spraying i.descided to give it a quick polish but it was too soon and f***ed the paibt and lacer completly, this pissed Me off so im going to leave the paint untill i get a compressor and spray gun kit :@ oh well thats where being impatient has got me so far

being as no one wanted to buy my little pug i have decided to continue the project so i may as well update my thread.

i have discovered two holes in the boot where the drainage pipes go so i have cleaned up the area and preped it for welding which a local guy has quoted to do for £60 :) also i found that under the bonnet on the offside pannel that runs next to the wing is rotten as well do this will need replacing, can i buy this from anywhere at all? also the sanding for paint all done and 1200 gritted down, i have sprayed the bonnet frount and rear bumpers and both wings and the drivers door, i decided on satin black as its easy to spray and get evan for my first full car i havent touched the rear quarters yet as i think the heat from the welding will make the paint bubble.

i am still in search for some bucket seats at the moment and contemplating weather or not to strip the car completly and have a custom dash with switches as the car will be used on a track soon enough hopfully the Tracks show at silverstone comming up. also i have found a guy who builds roll cages for fun! and has said he could do a bespoke one for my little cab, also i have started to spray the wheels bright silver, i think this will

look good against the satin black.

all pics are to follow im just uploading them to photo bucket now.

so todays efforts were getting he rest of the car sprayed up and the wheels on, but one of the tyres let me down (being flat) then the battery was dead so i called it a day let me know what you think of the paint job, please bear in mind it has been done with rattle cans and needs a clean.

this weekend has been spent on fitting a gti subframe and 309 wishbones hubs struts brakes ect its all a but rusty but thats not a problem for me. The main problem has been geting the shafts to fit my 1.4 box so im going to be cutting and welding a mismatch of the two types of shafts. ill get some pics of the progress tomorrow, at the moment im really pleases with the new wider track and stance.

Or just use the Cj hub carriers! Whtch the clearance of the droplink mounts on shocks to the body mounted Brake flexi bracket on full lock - potentially serious rubbing issues there.

heres some over due pics tonight i got a new drop link on and swapped the callipers. so now its running gti subframe with cj hubs and shafts and 309 wishbones and struts.

the rack still has some slight play in it which is annoying but its within the 13 mm mot requirements i think.

mot is tomorrow, after the ammount of work ive put this week i think ill cry if it doesent pass lol.
