Starter Compatible Issues

Hey

Long story...

Car is a 1991 1.9 - XU9JA (D6B)

The starter went, so i brought a re-bulit version of ebay, off a reputable guy who confirmed that it will work with my engine. The unit i took off the car had no part numbers on it as it was a referb'd model. When i put on new one, it clashed with the flywheel and made a grinding noise, eventually i figured out the teeth differed - otherwise they are identical. I went to the scrap yard and they found one that looked and measure pretty much the same as the broken version that came off the car, it was from a 406 16v (valeo D6RA661). It worked for a bit then packed in. Now having a proper part number, i rang peugoet and they gave me a price of 140 in total, figured its best to just buy a new one so. but before i decided to buy it, i contacted the guys that rebulit the car to ask did they put a 406 flywheel on, but they said no, it should be fine with the correct starter for that engine!

I'm now so so confused, do i buy the starter that is spec'd for my model or do i buy the one i know fits, or i think it does, with the chance it might be causing issue going forward. Once i buy, i can't return!

I read that all XU engines starters should be compatible? Is that true? So whats the deal so with the starter from e-bay, is it wrong, anyone have a starter that they can compare it to?

See comparison, left is the one i took out of my car, right is the "205 1.9" starter i got from ebay... Any thoughts??

"Reconditioned" starter from eBay? I think that it's fairly safe to point the finger of blame on this one.

AFAIK all XU starter motors are pretty much interchangeable, with a few notable exceptions - 2.0 Mi16/S16 engines need a different starter because the solenoid fouls the inlet, and I believe that the old XU5/XU9 "fat bodied" starters don't fit on the iron block XU10 engines properly although I've never personally tried.

Certainly I routinely fit late model XU7/XU10 starters onto earlier engines, and I've used diesel (XUD) starters before without issue too.

My advice regarding "reconditioned" parts, especially for older cars, is to buy them somewhere locally and with a decent warranty so you can easily take them back when they're either wrong or they fail after a few months - both seem to be very common in my experience.

Humm, just looked at the Peugeot service box and it appears that the D6RA661 starter is listed as a starter for the 205 XU and petrol. Therefor it should all be good... (i'm assuming that any petrol and XU car can use any starter listed here) Think i'll be looking for my money back off the e-bay guy so.

Thanks, going forward i'm not buying anything electronical or mechanical off e-bay! This has being a nightmare!

DId you try rotating the engine by hand after fitting the starter which "hit the flywheel and made a grinding noise"? I had exactly the same issue once after fitting a 406 diesel starter to my Mi16, fitted the starter and all it would do is hit the flywheel and grind, so i bump started it once and from then on its been fine; i'm sure that just turning the engine by hand would do the same thing though, just im an idiot!

As was the 406 diesel one i put on mine upon initial inspection. Its something to try as all XU starters are compatible (apart from the XU10J4 one) which has a different solenoid as stated.
