Exhaust Heat Wrap

Recommended Posts

Sorry can't search this one. While I'm building my engine out of the car and everything is accessible; is it worth heat wrapping my exhaust (GTI6 btw). I've just bought some fancy pants bbm hoses and I don't want anything damaged, might also keep engine bay temps down? Any particular brands of wrap better than others? Cheers

Heat-wrapping the manifold a trade off - it will keep the engine bay cooler and reduce problems with heat potentially damaging/effecting nearby parts, but typically heatwrap will dramatically reduce the life of the manifold and it's horrible stuff when it begins to break up and fray in the future.

Personally i don't like the stuff. It does keep the engine bay cooler but as Anthony said it is a trade off and in the long run i found it to do more harm than good.

Pugs in Pieces

i wouldnt do it again to a gti6 manifold thats for sure, it was a mare to get off after it started cracking and fraying, that was in a 306 too so a little more room to remove the stuff!!

You would be better of using a manifold paint, which is quite an effective thermal barrier. There is Black satin, Turbo blue and Cermakrome which is sold by Demon Tweeks. I used Turbo blue on mine and its quite effective, Also it seems to work on my brake calipers. This stuff is not cheap though, a small tin of turbo blue will cost £23 and the Cerakrome will be closer to £30. :)

Would I have the same problems with paint do we think? Am I better off using some kind of heat shield?

No you should not have the same problems with the paint as its designed for that and also will help stop corrosion.

This is the place to go to if you want a good job of it HERE

I hate exhaust wrap, not worth the effort.

GTi6 manifolds are a pretty decent grade of stainless steel so you won't have problems with corrosion, what you will have problems with is the bastard stuff disintegrating all over your engine bay after 6 months or so! <_<

I removed all of mine in the end for this reason, and those little fibres get absolutely everywhere once it starts breaking up! If you've got hoses or wiring that are close to the manifold I'd suggest heat wrapping them instead.

These guys do a wide variety of heat shield wraps, tapes etc, I bought some of the speed shield which has double sided tape. Protects my ecu wires coming through the bulkhead very nicely.

There just 2 stainless steel p clips with the rubbers removed mounted on a strip of aluminium that is then held to the bulk head using a nut on the m6 stud that pokes out.

How have you protected your fuel lines?
