About To Buy A 306 Hdi...

I have been offered a (very cheap) 306 Hdi which requires some work doing on it, and is currently off the road. The work that I know about doesnt bother me at all, but I dont know 306s very well so would like a few pointers about bits to look at before I jump in.

 

Its cherry red, and a 99 V plate, 180k HDi is all I currently know. What sort of spec/equipment should it have as a Hdi of that age, im guessing airbag, abs, elec windows, pas etc? Should it have alloys as standard?

 

I plan to possibly use it whilst I do it up over the next few months, then sell it on at the end, in nice condition how much would it be worth (roughly)?

 

Any advice gratefully received, although I understand this is a 205 forum :P

3 or 5 door? Usually 3 doors have cloth bucket style seats and (most) 5 doors have half leather. It'll have RCL with dead locks, electric everything bar seats. Aircon, power steering rain sensitive wipers and some even had cd changers. Airbags and abs too. They are pretty much top spec. (model dependant) Some came with GTi6 alloys, some had XSi alloys and some had steelies. (also model dependant)

 

Price wise, depends on overall condition, but if it's okay I'd hazard a guess at £800-1500ish depending on the spec and if everything works. Mileage is quite high though.

I've had mine for a few years now and a few things I've come up against are

 

- Auxillary belt pullies tend to give up and make a horrible noise (check out this LINK)

- Injectors can tick quite loudly on acceleration up to about 3000rpm then quite down (I believe this is fairly normal)

- The vibration of the engine tends to wear out engine mounts a bit quicker than the petrol models

- The low pressure (in tank) fuel pumps a known to give up ~£90 to replace

- Mine had an issue with really subtle hesitation when cruising - ended up being bits of perished rubber seal in the high pressure fuel pump

- People say if there are little filings in the fuel filter housing then the low pressure pump is failing and the high pressure pump is about to follow suit, this isn't the case, mine has a new low pressure pump and had little filings in the fuel filter housing few nearly 4 years - just shows the filter is doing its job

- Some can be a little bit funny electrically, like dipping lights when it's cold etc, usually fairly normal due to the power consumption of the glow plugs, again mine has been doing it for years.

 

Other than that the usual 306 buying guides will cover the general things. Good luck, mines been very reliable other than a few niggles and the initial HP pump issues

its spec depends largely on which model it is, hdi is simply the engine it has, you could have a DTurbo, which would be everything as per gti6 (interior suspension a/c etc) bar 266mm front brakes and 5 speed box, plus 77 bhp less of course :lol:

 

could also be a meridian which is a high spec non-sport model.

 

as its off the road then its only worth a few hundred at most, check the rear beam, poor starting, general electrical issues, though the later cars seem to fare better on electricals.

 

doubt the a/c will work if it has got it :lol: though more often than not its just a cse of replacing the lower pipe behind the front rad crossmember and a regas.

 

its a fair mileage, though that would not put me off at all, simply a bargaining tool to get it cheaper ;)

As Mei says, the atcul spec can be one of a few different trim levels.

 

Mine is a V reg D turbo hdi with remote c/l (key operated), ABS & electric windows but not the one touch drivers window.

 

It didn't have the dash mounted instrument lights dimmer rotary switch (but has now).

 

Mine had ac but like Mei also says, the front pipe must've gone previously because its been removed on mine so the compressor has an open hole.

 

This doesn't bother me & I plan to remove the compressor & some piping when I either swap the engine for the 67k one I have this year or sooner once I sort the belt & roller differences out.

 

Airbag's will be fitted (but expired, they have a 10 year life) so of little benefit imo.

 

Even as a fixer up with those miles it'll struggle to be worth much over £1k with a full MOT imo but then I'm replacing the rear brakes on a 157k 2001 406 hdi estate with current (but short) T&T to sell on soon but only expect to sell for a few hundred over what I paid.

Thanks Guys, much apreciated. Only reason its off the road is due to needing a clutch and broken drivers seat. I know the miles are high, but then again it is cheap, i wont say how cheap, but I am expecting to get quite a large amount of change back for £350. Will check on the spec when I hear back and can go and look at it.

would be a fair buy at £350 if that's it, clutch isnt bad to do on these, and there's lots of interiors about from gti's being broken up.

Air bag's should be fine, I quite often test the S16 ones of 1994 vintage and they go a good 25ft in the air.

Only thing I found on one was the dash stopped working, It was only a large fuse in the engine bay box with a wiggle has been fine ever since

I'm very tempted to buy one of these as a runaround; whats the mpg like in these? Engines able to cope with high mileage?

Some other major things with them would be the heater matrix as it's a fair bit of work to do, and also the door loom on the drivers door can have broken wires causing central locking/electric window problems. There is a repair loom from peugeot at £70 iirc.

Had my 306 HDI for about 3-4 years, great car, do's regular 45+ mpg, car hasnt wanted for anything apart from regular servicing and tyres, toyo cf1 and they done easy 12k inc a ring trip! I get the mentioned in previous post about ticking injectors but apart from that i love the car, missus uses it now for motorwork work now as i got a 406 HDI estate as tow car (306 would pull track car on trailer all day but struggled a tiny bit on hills) 306 currently at about 125k, brought at about 80k for 2k, grez4 on here had a green 306 HDI and sold it recently for about £600 ish i think and from memory it was around 200k?

If cared for, 306 HDi's will last well - mine's on 195k now and in the 38k miles that I've had it it's needed:

 

  • Routine servicing / oil changes
  • A set of tyres
  • A set of front and rear brake pads
  • Fuel pump relay (and I changed the low-pressure pump, although it wasn't needed)
  • Front droplink
  • Exhaust mid-section
  • Auxiliary belt and tensioner
  • Rear beam rebuild (not strictly speaking needed but done as a precaution)
  • Pair of brake rear hoses as they were beginning to perish
  • A couple of bulbs

About half of that list was for issues that were on the car when I bought it, so you can see how little it's needed for the miles that I've clocked up. The aircon doesn't work as you'd expect, but I'm really not that fussed hence I've never bothered to fix it - everything else works as it should though, and save for a catastrophic failure, I really don't see why it won't carry on plodding along for atleast another year or two doing 20k+ a year.

 

I really can't fault it, particular given what I paid - it's easily saved me well over what it's cost me to buy and maintain in fuel savings alone. Average is just over 50mpg (best 53mpg, worst 46mpg), and despite the mileage and still being on the original engine etc, it uses absolutely no coolant and maybe half a litre of oil between oil changes (every 12k miles) although it never needs topping up as such.

 

For the most part it's fairly easy to work on at home and if you're used to a 205 then it will all seem familiar, the only annoyance that I've found is that there's little space around the front and side of the engine - think 205 Mi16/GTi-6 rather than 205 8v and you're on the right lines.

my dturbo is on 99k at the moment and has been great, yeas its riddled with loads of little problems (mostly the ones listed above) but the engine has never let me down, just a shame its too small for me and im looking to replace it for a estate
