Oil All Over Engine Bay

Recommended Posts

unariciflocos

Got to work this morning after a very spirited drive and decided to inspect the engine bay before I go into the office and found that my fancy new 10w60 oil was all over my engine bay. Seems to have come out of the oil filler tower, onto the bonnet, travelled down the bonnet and then all over the cam cover, injector rail, exhaust manifold and expansion tank (LHD car).

All this happened after fitting this thing in my sump and changing the oil from 10w40 crappy run in oil to 10w60 synthetic oil.

Ideas please?wacko.gif What could cause this?

Inability of the oil to return quickly enough to the sump due to the baffle plate? It looks very restrictive. Remove it and see what happens. Or at least punch some holes it it. Perforated metal sheet would be a better choice. The oil breaks into droplets as it hits the holes.

That has happened to me couple of times, but only during the winter when "mayonnaise" freezes and blocks the oil gallery breathing hoses (or what ever they are called, the ones from filler cap to throttle body and inlet track). And then it usually comes through the dip stick tube.

My guess is that oil returning from the head drains on top of the "roof" and gets inside the filler tube blocking it which causes breathing problems and finally the overpressure blows the oil through the filler cap. Make a hole for the returning hole and see if it cures it.

I replaced the rod bearings yesterday as they were a bit affected by surge and removed that tray while the sump was off.

My guess is that because of the tray the passage in the block made for the hose from the oil filler was completely submerged in oil and caused the oil to travel up.

Seems to be fine now with only the baffle left.

After taking the sump off for the second time in a week i realized I hate this more than i hate doing drive shaft boots. I even had oil in my hair!

After cleaning what was left of the oil in my engine bay i need to say that engine oil is EXTREMELY good at cleaning things. Everything looks brand new now :D.

This is happening to my car when I'm driving fast! The oil comes from the head's returning tube and "sprays" the entire engine bay! I guess i'll have to take a look at the tubes and mybe disconnect them and clean..
