Is there an off the shelf solution to ditching the AC and PAS pumps on the '6 engine?

No.

I'm fairly happy with mine now though after weeks of faffing with it, I'v used rose joints and a length of threaded bar and keeps it nice and tight with adjustment as well. I got a gates belt from the factors, i had to exchange it 3 times to get the perfect length though . (I take no credit for the idea I copied Rallyeash's set up )

Leave the alternator bolted in place and use a cam belt tensioner of a 136t belt setup. There's a hole for it on the side of sump (from memory) and use a 6pk700 belt

As much as I tried with the cambelt tensioner I couldn't figure it out. In the end I've pushed the alternator forward with a bolt but I've got to get it done properly. I'd be grateful of some decent photos of this set up, please!

Cam belt tensioner is the one, Dead easy to fit too as the hole it there for it, Sorry never taken a picture of it but it is the same as the tensioner on the cambelt, cannot say any more

I'll try taking a pic of my mates setup, he's used the tensioner.

I had repeated problems with using a tensioner bracket to pivot the alternator. It kept snapping, I tried alsorts of way to try to stop it snapping. None worked

depends if you are using the massive later xu10 auxillary bracket or the earlier non aircon type like the iron MI16/s16 used, I used the earlier one and made a custom adjuster utilising the adjuster bolt from a 205 and some 3mm plate.

belt I used was just the 8v one, maybe slightly longer, and a normal 8v/diesel 205 alternator.

This might be where the problem is, mine is the early GTi6 with oil pressure instead of temperature.

Where did you get the tensioner from bud? I'll be darned if i'm paying £40 for a new one from pug. Can I use a similar tensioner from another model? Might be able to find something in the scrappy perhaps?

I got both the belt and tensioner from ECP. £40 is about what they cost anywhere really.

Haven't had the chance to go out and photograph the car yet, but basically there's a thread cut into the bracket that the PAS pump, AC pump and alternator are bolted to. Fit the belt over the alternator and crank pulley then fit the tensioner beneath the lower run of the belt, pushing it upwards to tension it. I couldn't tell you what thread it is as I happened to have a bolt that just fitted, but it's the same thread as the A/C pump mounting bolts, though you can't use those as they're too short.

Picture speaks a thousand words ;) heres how i did mine...

You'll need one of these:

Then use the tensioner and the shaft it runs in on an 8mm tapped hole already there on the engine mount.

Spot on, only I used a 6 rib belt as Paul_13 suggested.

Thanks Stu, found a tensioner in the garage from previous attempts. Going to add a lightened pulley before I fit it though.

How difficult do you think it will be to replace the belt and re-tighten it with the tension-er in a tight spot Stu ?
