How Can I Get More Bhp For My 1.9 Pug

Recommended Posts

STEVEBOXER

Hi,what is the most cost effective way of getting more bhp without an engine transplant.

I want to keep the original 1.9 engine but was thinking of getting more grunt(extra 50bhp),supercharging,throttle bodies???

Anyone got any ideas and prices please.

Cost effective and +50 bhp to 1.9 8 valve just don´t come together.

To gain 50 you would need:

-head work by skilled professional

-cam

-4-2-1

-throttle bodies

-programmable ecu

= at least 2000£

or

-turbo

-exhaust manifold

-IC

-hoses and pipes

-ecu

= at least 2000£

If you could be satisfied with bit less say +20-25 bhp you could do with:

-headwork

-cam

-chip

= less than 1000£

the standard cam is pretty hot.. if you believe dave baker.

as above really.

also i'm sorry to say that an after market cam, some reprogrammable chip.. and light headwork, won't get you 20bhp, it might get you ten, or eight. This will probably only bring the tired old 8v back up to somewhere near original book quoted power figures.

Your cheapest option for more power is to transplant a low milage GTI-6 or iron block MI-16 on a mild re-profiled inlet cam. circa 600 total cost. that will get you in the ballpark of 50bhp extra.

i know it's not the answer you want, but it's the truth.

Hope this helps.

or second hand parts like head/big cam/carbs may see a significant increase for less than 1k, but as said above engine transplant so much better and cost effective.

an 8v is plenty tunable, but initial gains are much bigger from the 16v engines.

they are XU's too, this is the TU section...

James who used to own your car and I did discuss an engine conversion for it at one point. I reckon its certainly a sound base for a conversion.

:o thin ice! there are lots of 8v purists on here!!

Lots more power from little money is thing of myth in a 205, its just not what they are designed to do! Its been commented on before but a GTI6 conversion will cost a few quid more than £600 if you do it to a high standard.

a decent exhaust manifold, cam and a good carb set up works a treat on these engines!
