mi16 or xsara vts gearbox might be a better choice for you. they retain the lower gearing upto 3rd wgile 4th and 5th are longer and more suited to cruising on the motorway.

i personally use a 1.9 gearbox on mine and i find it perfectly ok. some people will argue by saying there too long for the mi16 but seeing as mine isnt used on track it does me fine.

An Mi16 fifth in a 1.6 box will give a longer ratio fifth than any of the others mentioned above.

What rpm is it pulling at motorway speds?

Graham.

70 mph was coming at about 4000 rpm

i have a be3 mi16 box but i thought that the 1600 having the same 5th gear fitted there would be no point in changing to it

70 mph at 4k sounds just like a normal 1.6 box, i may stand corrected but i thought it would be lower rpm if it had 5th from an mi box????

may be seller was not being straight. in any case i do have a be3 mi16 box with a 4.44 cwp may be that would be a better option

Seller definately wasn't being straight, ~4k @ 70 is standard 1.6 box.

The Mi fifth on a 1.6 fd would be nearer to 3k iirc, it's the same ratio I used to run on mine when I had the 405 SRi gearbox fitted.

Mi16 gearbox would give approx 3.5k @ 70 iirc.

Graham.

looks like mi16 box is going to go in then. am i right in thinking this has a longer 4th and fifth than a standard 1.6 box and would cure all this high revs nonsense
