Fitting Windage Tray To Mi16

Recommended Posts

streetsleeper

I want to fit a windage tray to my mi16 and I have little mechanical experience. Ive got a gti-6 sump and windage tray and I could do with sum advice please. Ive been told that its just 4 bolts that hold it on and that i might have to make some threaded holes for these? Is it something that someone with little mechanical experience can do?

The windage tray on the XU10J4RS (GTi 6) engine is mounted to the crankshaft main bearing caps. It's been a while since I've seen them so I'm not sure on the exact method, you may be able to modify the mi16 caps to mount the windage tray in the same way.

Just found a link to a very good thread on this by Philfingers - http://forum.205gtidrivers.com/index.php?showtopic=90114&hl=mi16++sump++baffle

Sounds like you need to have a look at PeterT's website. He is a member on here and has a great website that has enlightened me. Here it is, and i am no way connected to him or his business btw

Thats the page about the sumps and windage trays but its all good reading.

Mine is mounted on the ribs off of the spacer plate.

Easiest is to get 4 new main bolts for an 2.0Mi16 engine and put those in. Their head is longer and has the threaded holes for the windagetray bolts already.

You do need to modify the windage tray however as the 2 ribs will touch the tray.

It's not that easy as 2L blocks are M12, whereas 1.9L blocks are M11. Or did you drill and re-tap?

Wasn't that the headbolts difference between M11 and M12?

I found the mains are also different when I gained a GTI-6 windage tray during my engine build & tried to fit it only to find the main bolts are a different size / thread. :(

If anyone wants the 4 bolts I bought them brand new before I found out they are a different thread! You can have them for postage If I can find them. :)

either my way (not pretty) or Peter's way (proper engineered solution) will work.

Mine runs a proper mechanical pressure gauge and i've not seen a hint of surge, note tho that I used Gti6 sump, chain, pulley, custom baffle trap door etc. It takes something like 6.8ltrs of oil!

If it was so easy as just changing the bolts we'd have gone that route!
