I want to get my 205 back on the road after many years sat in the garage. I still have lots of Started getting the 1.9 mi16 engine ready to put back in the car and have come across a couple of issues

Power steering: I have a 309 gti Rack already fitted to the car with good hoses and a 309 pump. 309/205 pas pump if i remember correctly sat on a different alloy bracket to the non pas model. I dont have this bracket and looking at the top engine mount i dont think it would fit. Is it possible to fit the 8v pas to the 16v with standard parts? If not i have a pump and bracket from a 16v that sits on the gearbox. Will a 405 mi16 high pressure hose fit and connect to the 309 steering rack? What pas set up do most use?

I have what I think is a 1.9 gti gearbox and a gti6 box. Would like to go six speed as i know its a 40k box. 1.9 box is unknown How do i verify what box it is? How restrictive is the steering lock for day to day driving if i did fit the six speed?

The head has reprofiled cams. I do not have mi16 wiring loom but have distributor adaptor. I have a set of 45 dellortos i could use or i have a shortened mi manifold. What power increase should i expect with well set up carbs. Also how badly it will affect fuel consumption. Cant decide which route to go with the cost of fuel now

Sorry for all the questions. Thanks Rich

Hi Rich, i used the mi pump on top the box, with a modified high pressure pipe (I got a local chap to make one up, might even have it lying around if your intrested) and the low pressure one is easy to make up. Unsure of info on the rack though.

I have heard good and bad bout the 6 speeds, shallow teeth make it a weak box i think, though sure someone else will correct me? Most (including me) find the Mi box to be a good bet, its gearing is shorter than a 1.9 and more suited, but this is very much personal opinion.

As for carbs, im not sure, i went for them for the sound, a few more brake (5-10ish?) and the fact i just wanted them, fuel consumption is not that bad if driven carefully, stick you foot down, and it will drink it, but this is the same as any car.

Hope this helps, i wont claim to be an expert but i can always pop over if you want a hand as im in Bristol too?

Matt

Thanks Matt i will pm you

I am interested in buying the pipe from you if you still have it. Have done some research and the connections on the 309 & 205 racks are the same so it shoud fit. However found a post saying bx16v pumps could not be used and were different to 405mi16 pumps. Is this true, I am not sure what pump i have is there anyway to tell?

I am going to fit the 6 speed as i know its a 40k box. Not much extra power over a standard gti6 so i would hope it will last a while. I have taken the diff, clutch arm, speedo drive ,selector arm and diff off the 1.9 box today. Intent to put them on the gti 6 box tommorow and fit the box to the engine.

Think i will stick with the original plan and fit carbs as i dont have the correct mi managment.

bx's used lhm fluid for the pas and the suspension and brake hydraulics iirc.
