Fuel Pick Up For Out Of Tank Pumps

Recommended Posts

GilesW

I'm plumbing in my swirl pot, facet and bosch 044 in my 205Mi to ensure fueling is never starved.

The standard 205 tank (H plate plastic tank) has the in-tank pump, which I obviously want to ditch as teh facet will lift fuel to the swirl pot.

This means I need to replace the fuel pump with something that still lets fuel be sucked up out the tank.

Options are:

1) Make up a pipe/something that will go in the old pump position and suck up from teh bottom.

2) I was think I could replace the in-tank pump with a low spec carb engined pick up (don't they have an engine mounted mechanical pump)?

What have people doen in thsi situation?

WHat you used?

Anyone know if a carb spec pick-up will fit and do the job?

Cheers for any info.

i changed the tank for a base model one [had to anyway as i discovered that previous owner had drilled a hole in it when fitting the roll cage and patched it with plastic padding and duct tape!!!] and used a diesel pickup as it is larger bore

The previous owner of mt 205 ran carbs so got rid of the in tank pump. All he had done for the pick up was to remove the pump from the original housing (the black plastic bit that drops into the tank and fit a piece of pipe with a gauze on the end instead.

I did very much the same, kept the top and got rid of the pump and used a copper pipe with a splay on the end. Be for it goes to my remote pump it passes through an in line filter.

Thanks guys. Some good info there.

Might have a look see if I can get a cheap diesel pick up, as it'll be nice and tidy, or else make something up (did this on my last car).

Why can't you just use the standard pump to lift the fuel to the swirl pot and not use the facet?

Out of tank pumps are easier to get at an maintain !

Several reasons I want to use the facet:

1) it's meant for the job - high volume low pressure.

2) its easier to look after and maintain.

3) it has built in (cleanable and replaceable) first stage pre filter that I can easily get at.

4) it has jic connectors which I like on all my fuel system (albeit the tank pick up obviously wont, and it's low pressure side so not a massive requirement).

5) its a known quantity, ie not a 100k+ old 205 pump.

6) I have it already (whole fuel system from my last car).

7) i like the constant clicking/droning all the time the car is running. Lol.
