Petrol Tank Spitting Fuel

Recommended Posts

TaffyTim

When filling the car up it likes to try and chuck half of its fuel back out of the 'in' hole.

is there a breather to clean to prevent this or some other method?

I think they all do it. The 3 I've owned have done it.

It's certainly not "normal" for it to spit fuel back at you, atleast not in my experience.

Assuming that you suffer the issue at multiple fuel stations and pumps, I'd drop the fuel tank off the car (make sure it's low on fuel first!), check that there's no obstructions in the fill pipe and check that both of the breather pipes are clear and aren't kinked.

Also, make sure that you put the nozzle in all the way and that it's pointing roughly down the filler pipe.

Its done it for years, worse after its been driven hard or when very low on fuel.

where are the breathers? Can I access them without dropping the tank out?

Breathers run from the top of the tank (so you can't get to them without partly dropping the tank), through an opening behind the rear quarter, and then up and along the top of the wheelarch with the main filler pipe. There's another breather that runs to the rear of the wheelarch near the bumper mount, but as far as I'm aware that one won't cause issues with filling up, only with excess fuel tank vapour not being able to vent.

really need to drop the tank as access is a right arse, the breathers can be bit of a pain to get on as well as there isn't much spare. On my old 1.8D one of the breathers had corroded so pissed a few litres od diesel over the fourcourt before I noticed  never filled it over 1/2 after that. So yer breather are usually to blame.
