1.9 Gti Brake Compensator Direction?

Which way round do the compensators go on the 1.9 GTI? I have done a search and found the following:

 

 

1 posts saying the small union (M10) is closest to the M/C

 

and

 

1 post saying the large union (M12) is closest to the M/C

 

At the moment I have the M12 union closest to the M/C and the rear brakes are locking under heavy braking. As the compensators were 2nd hand, I'm not sure if they are knackered or fitted the wrong way round.
