405Mi16 Gutmann Estate

Recommended Posts

Simes

I've recently gone through my collection (1988-1992) of this magazine, being a weekly there are quite a few of them! A fantastic period, you'll agree, for the car we all like.

Attached is the Autocar and Motor short review of the 405Mi16 Estate by Gutmann.

Enjoy

Nice!

I remember a few years back I was in my local Pug dealer getting bits for my 405, I was chatting to the other bloke in the queue who said he used to have one of these

See the link in Simes's post immediately above yours - that's a high resolution (1689 x 2400) version that's plenty big enough for reading or printing.

Looks very tasty for an estate, and I'd love to see more of the full leather interior and Recaro seats. But regarding the engine, it looks like it's running a dizzy adaptor  and I found it interesting that they retained the shorter inlet, as per the 205 conversion, instead of keeping the original manifold. I can understand why, from the point of view that it's one of their branded modifications, but at the same time it's pointless.

I have seen a few of these over the years and a couple of kits have popped up on eBay. The UK one was done buy Graham Mitchell (GM) Design in Bristol and was last seen sitting forlorn in the back of a carpark somewhere in the vicinity about 3 or 4 years ago as someone in the PSOOC contacted me about it (I think it was Adrian Meredith - the Avon group leader). I think it is the one in the feature above as I don't think there were that many done.

The one to try and locate is the TopCat dragster 405 which had the Gutmann front on it...

I think they used that inlet as it was all part of the i16V 175bhp kit which I am guessing they would have fitted to this demo car (though Gutmann did offer a twin Webers manifold too, but being German, they were more interested in the emissions side, so mostly stuck with the injection)

My Gutmann archive is available in the PSOOC Downloads area with its own special area as an old school tuner, along with Charters, Turbo Technics, Skip Brown etc

I think some of my scans TT, skip brown exist in that area, ironically I can't access them as I'm no longer a paid up member.
