Distributor And Gearbox Query

Recommended Posts

Schern

Myself and a mate have a 1.6 GTI we're working on as a cheap track project and I'm trying to figure out if we have a bit of an oddity or just if someones fitted the wrong parts previously. The coil is on top of the inlet manifold with a male output. The distributor is all female. As far as I can see the only options for HT leads are all male or all female. The distributor cap is held on with clips and a quick ebay search seems to show that all the male dizzy caps have screw fixings. Is this correct or just dodgy ebay photos? Has anyone else come across this type of oddity before or has someone in the cars history bought the wrong bits? There's been some arcing within the dizzy cap and the lead to cylinder 4 is corroded so want to change the set but can't find one that matches the setup currently on the car.

Gearbox wise the clutch action seems a bit notchy and sticks a bit when the pedals at the floor. We've had the cable out and lubricated it and this doesn't seem to have altered anything so would suggest it's the release bearing but there seem to be 2 different types. How do I know what I've got before splitting the gearbox away from the block? It's on a J plate. Thanks!

Sounds like A normal set up on a later gti to me.

As for the gearbox it should be a be3 gearbox but easy to tell if reverse is to right and sown it is be3 if it is lift and to left and up then be1.

On a j plate it should be the later of 2 clutches only difference is the bearing though.

If I were you while out I would change the clutch release fork bushes and the first motion shaft guide bush can be had from pug for under £15,if you want part numbers let me know as I have done mine this week so got invoice handy.

It's got a BE3 box then as reverse is under 5th. If you could let me have the part numbers please Smithy then that would be awesome.

Miles - PM sent.

the release bearing guide bush/first motion seal and gasket are

210925 gasket 0.36p

210517 guide bush £16.69

fork and lever kit 211524 £55.01

fork bushes,217522 £1.77,217514 £2.06

dont forget the diff seals aswell.

dont know the clutch number i bought a valeo kit off fleabay for £30 but there are only 2 types and yours will be the later 1989 onwards i think is date range.

while it is out i would also change the rear main oil seal as it is only an extra half hour to do and seal only about a tenner.
