Squeaky Car But Not Sure Where From?

Recommended Posts

jason7579

My 205 has gradually developed a squeak that happens almost all the time when going over bumps or driving over uneven roads. I thought it may be suspension or beam related but have found that when parked and the handbrake is off there are no squeaks at all if I rock the car from the front, back, left or right. With the handbrake on there is a squeak though?

I have tried moving the exhaust, the spare wheel cage, the air filter and can't get any of them to squeak. When sat in the car it sounds to me like its coming from the front left wheel, it sounds to my wife like its coming from the front right wheel (or so she says, if its not a microwave or washing machine I don't trust her judgement ;)) I seem to hear it more frequently when the left side of the car is on uneven ground.

Any ideas on what I should try next, MOT time soon so I am going to ask there but would like to see if I can fix it before a garage charges me for sorting it.

Thanks

Sounds like a worn out bush

If it sounds like its coming from a front wheel I would hazard a guess at ARB like worn out, try disconnecting it and seeing if the noise goes away.

Thanks, I'll whip the ARB's off at the weekend and see if that cures it, changing them was one of my many jobs on my very long to do list anyway.

Failing that I will see if I can spot any worn bushes and if that doesn't work I'll sulk and stamp on the floor until it fixes itself.

could just remove the droplinks instead of the whole ARB

my 306 done this, and it was a ARB bush

Just a quick update as I found the problem

I really haven't had the time to get under the car until last weekend (hence the delay in replying) the bushes on the ARB on the n/s needs replacing and I'll do the other side too, this however was not where the squeak was coming from on investigation. Having a little listen and knocking and shaking a few things it was coming from roughly the n/s half of the rear beam. Panic set in thinking either major work which isn't easy when you have no time to even check the car out or an expensive replacement was required. A few more minutes of tinkering and I found that the problem was a screw or bolt is missing from what I believe is the exhaust heat shield, so this is moving around and rubbing causing a squeak.

I have been living with the squeak for weeks and all it took was 2 minutes to bend the heat shield slightly, I will soon be removing the exhaust and doing a proper fix.
