Mi16 Batt Light Stop Light And Rev Counter

Recommended Posts

backroadpug

Hi all I have just fitted my rebuilt mi 16 back into the 205

problem is with the ignition off and key out the battery light stays on till the car is started then goes out

also the stop light at the dash does not illuminate with ignition on and the rev counter doesnt work

Ive checked all the electrical plugs are connected properly and go to the right sensors, all of the above worked when the last engine was in?

Ill have a proper look tonight after my work see if I can see anything.

Where would you start off and is there anything to look at first?

Cheers Richard

Are you sure the alternator & oil pressure stop light wires aren't crossed over?

Check fuse #1 hasn't blown for some reason, iirc this covers the rev counter & dash lights.

That doesn't sound right to me but what have you changed to fit the Mi16 engine, have you used the 205 sensor loom or spliced into the Mi loom?

Starter motor has two wires to it but only one to the solenoid triggered by the ignition switch thats usually a single thicker blue #46B, the other is the thicker cable directly from the battery positive attached to the main body by a ring terminal.

Colours for the other wires are normally;

  • Alternator = brown.
  • Starter solenoid = thick blue.
  • oil pressure guage = grey.
  • Oil pressure switch = orange.

Cheers pug ham for the quick replys. The problem is the car was already fitted with the mi when I bought it. The car has the mi16 loom spliced into the gti loom and running the mi16 ECU

Yea I have the live running from bat to starter to altenator

the bown wire going to the starter is negitive then switches to live with the ignition on

the two blue wires that go to the starter one thick one thin splice together in to the black terminal(looks factory fitted)

Ill have to have another squint when I get the chance might be a bit colour blind.lol Maybe one of the blue wires is grey but Im sure there wasnt an orange wire.

What you need to do is get a multimeter, pull the 6 pin and 9 pin plugs from under the dash and check to see where each wire is going to. There's a schematic somewhere here if you do a fast search showing what each wire in the two plugs are. I'm sorry but I'm to lazy to search for it myself :( and my car files are on my work laptop.

If you have a brown wire going to the starter its wrong, that's the alternator wire imo from my previous reply.

As for the sensor, take the wire off & ground it to the block to see which sensor goes full scale or puts the stop light on.

The oil pressure sender grey & starter solenoid light blue could be mixed up thinking of the poor access to get to them but they are different grade wire with the blue being a noticably thicker wire.

You have reconnected & tightened the loom earth ring to the gearbox earth stud haven't you?

I seem to remember an Mi I worked on where it was loose had issue similar to this until I found it loose & it magically fixed itself once tight.

Ok I have my battery light and oil presure gauge working now.

I dont seem to be getting an earth to my rev counter if i supply my own it works

Also I dont seem to have an earth to the oil warning light and coolant warning light

Is there a certain earth point at the dash I should check?

Cheers
