Water Coming Out Header Tank Overflow

Recommended Posts

Doof

Hi everyone. It's been a while since I posted on here. Hope all is well with everyone's cars!

I've got a bit of a water leak on my 205 at the minute. I just ran it for a while while I was under the car and noticed it's coming from the header tank overflow pipe. I took the cap of the header tank and there's a lot of bubbling and swirling going on but it's probably normal...maybe?

It looks like it's probably steam condensing up in the rim which collects and dribbles down the pipe.

It's dripping reasonably quickly. Quick enough for me to want to fix it anyway.

Looking at it, the spring loaded seal should stop any water even getting up to the overflow pipe. I wondered if a new cap with a stronger spring and new seal could fix it?

Any ideas anyone?

Lewis

Sounds like a replacement header tank cap will probably sort it.

Be careful if you get a higher pressure rated cap from a later model, as despite "fitting" some of them don't seal properly against a 205 header tank.

I can't remember the exact details now, but I know Garry had this issue and there's a thread somewhere about it.

you just need to make sure its a 205 cap, specifically a gti or turbo diesel item as they are higher pressure than most models (1.4 bar instead of 1 bar), same pressure as 306 ones (that dont fit properly as mentioned) I have posted pics of the differences not so long ago.

Ok, the search function wasn't working earlier today. I'll have a dig through some posts and see if I can find the threads you're talking about.

Good to know it's an easy fix! Thanks for the info guys.
