Mi16 Dizzy Adapter Question

Recommended Posts

Hi all.

Been away from this forum for very long time due to some pretty bad things happening in my life. Been looking in occasionally, though been very long time since i last posted. I hardly reconised the site as it's apperance has changed so much!

Anyway, lifes good again, and it's time to get the love of my life back on the road, My Laser Mi. Obviously, I've got running issues straight away, mainly because of my lack of mechanicing skills!

The cars been standing/stored for pretty much four years, and when it came time to get her running, she burst into life pretty much the same as she always did. Only problem was a slight missfire. As car been stood so long, decided to treat her to new leads, cap, arm, plugs and coil. I was confident i knew firing order and plug order to cap off the top of my head, so just ripped old leads of instead of one of, one on! After searching forum ane net though, i'm sure i have every thing correct, but i cant get car running, sounds like firing order is wrong. I definately have spark and fuel.

My question is does anyone know if dizzy adapters, which mine has, can alter the position of the dizzy, and therefore the rotor arm positon when no1 cyclinder is at tdc? I've got no1 lead on top inner plug on dizzy cap, which I'm sure is the correct postion on a standard mi, and also on an 8v dizzy when on an 8v engine. In order of rotation on cap, i then have 3,4,2 following.

Hope that all makes sense, because I'm finding it kinda hard to put into words!

Finally, nice to be back, glad to see so many people still into what for me is best drivers car ever, and look forward to hopefully some views and advice.

Thanks in advance, Adrian.

The adapter just makes the dizzy spin, and wont alter the timing, have you taken the dizzy off?, if so, is it back on in the correct position? A photo might help with lead position.

Thanks for reply.

Yes, i've taken dizzy off. Actually replaced it with know good one. Bit tricky to get pics at mo, but i could if needed.

My point about lead postion on cap is.... lets say the dizzy originally mounted to head with spindle/key way in vertical posion when no1 cyclinder is tdc. Now if dizzy adapter fits to head in this position, but is machined with key way in horizontal postion on side that fits to distributor, then you would have a 90 degree difference when using adapter, thus which ever plug on dizzy cap that no1 lead goes to as standard would be changed because rotor arm would have moved 1/4 turn backwards or forwards.. Obviously, firing order of 1,3,4,2 would not be altered, but position of leads on cap would be.

Hard to put into words what i mean, but hopefully someone will get what i'm tryin to say!!

Anyone with pics of both sides of a dizzy adapter might be able to shed some light on this?

Thanks, adrian.

Miles

Just find number 1 and fit the leads accordingly, as they can be fitted in various ways

Just quick update to put this to rest..In answer to my own question, and back up what Miles said, YES, dizzy adapters do affect rotor arm position.

With #1 lead now sitting where #4 would be in standard config, the car is now running mint. Took bit longer than planned due to weak spark issue which turned out to be cap!

Thanks to those who replied.
