is your mi16 a 1.9 or 2litre mate? i would of thought they would be to small as i ran twin 40s on a 1.6 fiesta xr2 a few years ago which ran lovely but also on my 205 which is a 1.9 8v i have twin 45s and they run really well.

Remember that bigger isnt always better! If the choke size is too big then the air speed through the venturi at low engine speeds wont be sufficient for proper fuel mixing. I would think 40s would be fine, bear in mind the the choke size internally can be swapped too i believe.

I have 45s, which have 36mm chokes, not sure what the biggest choke size is on a 40, but you cold probably find out.

Pugs in Pieces

i know of a fair few people who have used 40s on mi16s over the years, most seemed to have very similar results to 45s, as said above much depends on the size of the choke venturis, i think both 40s and 45s will take 36mm chokes, these are often the most common size used. i have run 40s and 45s on 1.9 8v engines with 36mm chokes in both and results were very similar.

tony perks

just an example we had a caterham(2.0XE) in work recently that ran really badley overfuelling every where, and just no go when we checked the cams etc it was all std, but was fitted with 48dcoe carbs!, we couldnt find any 45's in the time frame we had but we had a nearly new set of 40's so these were fitted and set up on our rollers, and the engine was still rubbish , but it was very tired so aftera re-build (bored 270 cams ) and run in we re ran it setting it up and on 40's with 34mm choke this engine made just short of 200bhp, with bags of torque from virtually idle all the way up to 7000, the owner was so pleased the car is now a pleasure to drive, and will nearly reach 35mpg on a run!!

So by all means fit 40's, just because the size isnt fashionable on a larger engine.
