Hi all im jIm and im 14

,

i got my GTI 3-4 weeks ago and since then its been non stop progress so thought id make a thread on here,bear in mind some of this is copied off another forum £370 plus £75 to get it back:wall:

its a 1991 in white with a half leather interior, its mostly origional aside from a few stickers(which are now gone!) and it looks like its been lowered

its had an engine change as the last one blew up but at the moment its not running as half the engine is in the boot or in my bedroom lol it needs quite alot of things doing to it and its sort of like a restoration

be warned there is lots of pics and wrighting

anyways heres the pics

it was very dirty so gave it a wash :detailer:

also theres this stain on the rear bumper, dont know what it is but it wont come off and its burned the paint underneath so that needs repainting:wall:

the list of things to do is a long one :wall:, will update when i get them done

 

ENGINE:

fit alternator-done

fit airbox+flow meter- done

fix wiring mess- done

fix sloppy gears( may be that there not set up right but it may also need new linkages as its a common problem on the GTI's)-done

general checks then fire up- done

 

BODY

repair rust on passengers side

refurbish wheels- done

paint/clean up under the arches

heat gun the arches+ bumpers or paint if need be

do something with the petrol cap(wrong one for the car)- painted just needs replacement plastic

detail- done

remove stickers- done

 

INTERIOR

fix wiring mess again

drivers seat- done

bonnet latch needs fixing (stretched cable)

clean/detail-done

 

UNDERSIDE

clean up/paint

fit origional back box

check gears- done

 

as you can see quite alot to do so better crack on with it :thumb:

got some painting done

 

could do with another coat and a bit of smartening up but they look alot more presentable, the black airbox isnt painted just polished

 

the rear beam is bent, looks like its spun and hit a curb, heres some better pictures

it used to have an alar/immobilizer which was taken out by the previous owner and has left a nasty looking hole so will have to get a new heater vent

 

also someones been at the accelerator its taped together lol

on to the engine then

 

started well by fitting the alternator looked pretty nice lol

 

removed the grill aswell to do some investigating

 

took the rocker cover off for a look and everything looks nice under there

 

then i saw the dodgy wiring it looks like it was put together by a 2 year old

removed the air intake to get more access so fuel rail out

 

bolt undone and removed

and the engine and horrific wiring underneath

 

either going to have to get a new loom or fix the current one

 

also im now repping the crystals lol

 

the light covers are on the cards for refurbishing aswell as the inlet:D

then i decided to do a bit of interior renovation

couldent get the passengers seat out due to rounded off bolts so had to clean it in the car:rolleyes:

so attacked it with some cheap carpet stain remover (only £1.99:thumb:)

cleaned up under the rear seats as it was a bit manky

also fitted the polished up rear lights

got me a new gasket for the intake

only £5

 

been painting the intake today just to freshen it up, it was painted in aluminium silver and isnt too far of its origional colour

 

will look nice fitted

getting the paint for the underside soon aswell and some other bits like a rear view mirror (its missing for some reason) and the drivers heater vent

 

 

on to cleaning/painting up the engine, heres before;

 

no oil leaks and a nice dry block, but it was very dirty and not very nice to look at so had a look in the shed and found some nice heat resistrant paint

so first coat

then on to the head which was alright but again not nice to look at so

silver it goes

 

aswell as the PAS pump and pipe

and the engine mount

 

and the rocker cover was sprayed in the same paint as the intake

 

all back together

 

will look nice when the inlets on

 

gave the coil a spruce up

 

and got the paint for the underside:)

9x 150ml = 1350ml so 1.3 litres of paint, proberably need more but only cost me £3 as it was 3 for £1

i decided to investigate the rear beam problems so wheel off and heres the brake:)

look like they've been changed recently which is good

calliper and disk off

then the backing plate

had a look at the hub and was pretty shocked :doublesho

looks like the stub axel is bent

 

so on to some painting

backing plate for rear disk was horrible so painted it satin black

looks allot better

then onto the engine mount, i had a spare with the car and the one i painted silver with a brush didnt look very good so i decided to spray the spare one

 

here it is unpainted

 

and then some silver

almoast looks plated lol

and whilst looking underneath i spotted this

its a supersprint

not done much today just a bit of sanding and painting

 

first off the rear bumper had a stain on it, it looked like oil and wouldn't come off no matter what i used so out came the wet and dry lol

here it was before

and after

then i moved on to the driving lights, they had been painted white and didn't look right so off they came and sanded them down

then a few coats of satin black

and on the car

much better

took a trip down the scrappy where there was a 205 diesel with a GTI bodykit:D

i only got a few interior bits though, drivers heater vent, center console vents and a rear view mirror:D

and the center consol was missing the vent and it had some silicone around the gap so i fitted a new vent and it looks miles better

 

also gave it a wash had a thick layer of dust/dirt on it

then i fitted my new filler cap

 

 

agin from the scrapyard i got this;

its been half eaten by a dog but the important half is still there

 

heres what it will be replacing

so hopefully ill have a nice bolster by the end :thumb:

 

also a subtle bit of stickerage

the bear is innocent lol

 

how the seat went

 

a quick before

 

after taking a load of clips off and some bolts i peeled back the fabric and was left with this

very nasty, fell to bits when i touched it

so cut that off, placed next to the new one

 

new one on

 

and fabric replaced

 

will get a better picture later on

his is the next job lol

took the tape off the ignition coil wiring to find this

so thats all getting fixed tommorow then putting the engine back together and maybe start up

 

got this through the post today aswell,going to polish a few bits with this

and a better picture of the seat in the car.

it is really comfy to sit in now and actually supports you

 

right then today was eventfull

first off cut and re-solderd the starter solenoid wire which went well, then did the same to the ignition coil wires and then the burned wire (still dont know where it goes lol )

did take some pictures but i accidently deleted them

so on to putting the engine back together

first off new inlet gasket on

then the inlet

then fuel rail and coil

then the alternator went on along with the belt then tentioned

then the air filter air flow meter and pipes, then battery:)

final checks then i turned the key and.... it cranked freely but it wasnt firing so a quick look around determined a loose throttle position sensor and no petrol :wall:

 

so sensor tightend and £5 petrol put in, thurned the key and...

 

ITS ALIVE :D

 

sort of lol it wont idle and it sounds like its running on 2 cylinders which i think is down to timing so will set that tommorow

also a massive cloud of smoke came out the back , which i suppose is because it hasn't run for 9 or so years.

 

also the lights dont work properly, they need a wiggle/slight tap to make them come on but they sort of work

well its been a busy day today lol

went to the market and got 4 cans of vauxhall anthracite for £4 and they even had alpine white for £1 each

 

so got back and the car was up in the air straight away

then they were sanded and the curb marks were repaired then masked and on to some paint

rim un-masked

really happy with the results totally transformed the car

 

then the grill got some special treatment

 

here was before, the black bits were deep scratches in the plastic

so fillered

and then painted, also i repainted the peugeot badge in some silver hammerite :thumb:

and back on the car

also the petrol cap got painted

again really happy with the results once the car is washed they should look exellent

also started some cutting and polishing but it got too late

you can see the difference between the door and the rear quater (rear quater has been polished)

 

the drivers door has loads of defects not the best of pics but it has scraches and rust stains all over but hopefully it will polish out

 

 

also the bonnet has a few marks like this one

 

and last but not least my new tax disk holder

Not much to update, tried starting it to get the timing gun on it but it wouldent start so did some investigating and timing was out :wall: yesterday i set the timing for the ignition but didnt check the engine timing, which was out by 180 degrees so today i've set the engine and the ignition timing so hopefully tommorow it will run and i can get the timing gun out

 

i changed the bottom pulley today for the power steering pulley as the non power steering pulley is allot thicker

so with the new one on i can put on the fan belt

 

heres how i left it tonight

 

got a new breather today

rescued from a citroen xm lol

 

also got some carpet/felt out of a polo's glovebox and decided to do something with it so put it in here

and trimmed down

holds you phone nicely and feels nice

 

got the cambelt done today and timing set up properly, put it all back together and fired it up (literally) a big flame came out the exhaust from the unburned fuel its still missfiring everywhere and wont idle which i think is down to the missing breather (hadn't bought the one from the scrapyard when i started the car ) so thats now installed but it was too late to start it up again

 

wont be any progress tommorow, off to alton towers for the day

todays been eventfull lol

first off got the rotary out on my brothers polo

no before pics but its allot more shiny now

 

and then on to the GTI

the method was

washed with simoniz car shampoo and a noodle wash mit then dried with a waffle weave drying towel,

then t-cut was used in some places for a few scratches and marks then polished using the rotary and autoglym SRP

then waxed with dodo juice supernatural,

the windows were cleaned using carplan screen clean and door/bonnet shuts cleaned with Mr muscle all purpose cleaner

got some polish on the side trim and it went darker so went over the whole thing and it made it look nicer

will be taking it for a run up and down the road when i get it all timed up

Wow quite a turn around, nice! Get some Plasticare on that trim it will make the car look like new
