Intermittent Starting Issue

Recommended Posts

RickyD

Good Afternoon All,

I've had my 1.9 GTI for just under two months now and it's developed an intermittent starting issue. Sometimes it starts straight away and others it takes up four to five times to turn over.

Could it be one of the following, however I haven't had a chance to look at it:-

1) Faulty alternator

2) Faulty Starter Motor/Solenoid

3) Loose Connections

It makes a chunking noise when trying to start it up and from past experience of Mini ownership many moons ago, sounds like the Starter Soleniod making the noise would could suggest that it's the motor or a loose connection.

It's a 91-H Plate phase 1.5 by the way.

Many Thanks in advance.

sounds like either a dodgy starter motor or problem with the trigger wire.the trigger wire problem seems to be a fairly common one.

do a search and loads of info comes up

Cheers smithy, I will do a search for the trigger wire.

I tried the car before and it started 1st time. I've also just read the procedure for renewing the starter motor and I didn't realise that it was a coolant drain and manifold off job.

Cheers
