Xs Carb Setup

Recommended Posts

aymen_a22

Just wondering if there is any way to "reset" the carb on my 1990 205 XS.

The car runs very well however starting is really poor. I usually have to pull out the choke and give it a little gas and then it fires while coughing, only after I have revved it to around 2000RPM and held it there is settles nicely.

Any ideas?

Is that when warm or cold start? If warm then (is it in the manual!?) you are suppose to have the throttle open to start it to do with fuel evaperation or something. How does it idle when warmed up?

thats right, when the engine is hot the fuel has evaporated before even reaching the cylinder.

if you are talking about cold starting, with my xs i used to keep it at around 2000rpm for a good few minutes before pushing the choke back in so if your experiencing that then its normal.

what you can do though is remove the air filter check the condition replace if nessesary, check how clean the carb itself is down the venturis spray some carb cleaner down there and wipe away dirt.

also if you can afford it use 98ron fuel, from factory the timing was set for 98ron the engine will run better overall on the higher quality fuel aswell

Ah - reminds me of the joy of having a sweet spot with the choke on my rallye with the various twin choke solex carbs I fitted. Just too little or too much and you could forget it! I'm not saying that it is that mind you.

I'm with Allye and I'd also like to know if it is a hot or cold start problem.

As an aside it's usually good to strip down and clean out the carb if you've never done it/it's not been done in a long time - usually brings about an improvement in the running. Plenty of old posts on here about how to do it including the usual "where the hell are the jets!" type posts.

Thanks for all the replies. It is usually okish if I press the accelerator a little with the choke from cold and once warm it idles around 700/800 rpm.

Once warm and I try to start the engine it is completely random, sometimes a little gas works sometimes it will just fire.....strange!!

I have noticed when looking down the carb that there is a little fuel sitting when the engine is off, is this normal.

I have also noticed that if I clean the carb (outside) after a few drives there is oil around the top and a little oil on the inlet manifold.

I am assuming you are all going to say rebuild however does this mean new jets etc or can I make some gaskets from gasket paper etc.

Any ideas welcome

The gaskets are too complex to make, you can get the kit for about £45 (robbing bastards) it doens't include jets, its filters, gaskets and seals.

Carbs have a complete mind of their own, they have moods, good days and bad dayss  the idle can change, how you start them can change, just got to love old cars!!

If you are opening the butterfly(ies) to look down the arrels of the carbs then yes this is usual as you will be operating the accelerator pump - if you look carefully you'll see a jet of fuel being squirted down each barrel.

I have also noticed that if I clean the carb (outside) after a few drives there is oil around the top and a little oil on the inlet manifold.

The rocker cover breather is plumbed into the air intake just before the carb so that oil vapour from the crank case gets burnt rather then vented to atmosphere. This is why you have oil in the carb top cover - usually this is sealed onto the top of the carb with a rubbery gasket so perhaps yours is missing?

Shouldn't automatically need new jets but a replacement needle valve would be good. I've only ever broken one main gasket on the carbs I've had so don't get hung up on needing a reuild kit just to take one appart and clean it out.
