Mi16 Not Running Properly

Recommended Posts

Hi Folks, finally the inevitable has happened and my MI is playing up after 3 years of relatively trouble free motoring! Not sure whether I have caused it whilst "tinkering" or if it's a part failiure. All I have been doing is removing the grotty old earth points and renewing the connections with new terminals.

Anyway this is the problem, it started happening the other day and has got worse and worse. It starts fine from cold and idles at around 900rpm without a problem. Then once it starts to warm up if you blip the throttle and let the revs drop it just cuts out. It first started doing it the other day whilst driving, every time I was about to come to a stop the beggar would stall. Just dropping the clutch whilst moving bump started it again though and I had to keep catching it on the throttle. Now though, once its cut out it wont start again on the key unless you give it gas as you turn the key. It is also very lumpy when I keep the throttle at a constant and there is a smell of very rich exhaust.

I had the air flow meter off whilst doing the earthing but have made sure its all back together properly with connector on and cant find any air leaks in the intake.

I put a multimeter to the fuel pump whilst running it and the reading was 2-3 V not sure if this is normal.

when I unplugged what I think is the tachometric relay (large white three pin one under ECU) it ran the same as with it.

Ive checked that the Idle valve on the inlet manifold has a feed and its getting 12V

There are two lots of relays in the engine bay, 2 on the left and 2 on the right, that I have unplugged, inspected and put back as the connections look good.

was going to change the fuel filter today but halfrauds didnt have any 205 or MI ones in. Could this be caused by something as simple as a blocked filter?

I assume its getting a spark as it will run in a fashion with the throttle down and Ive felt the coil and ignition module and they dont seem excessively warm to touch.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated as my head is sore from all the scratching. Regards,

Jon.

Its a 1.9 alloy MI16 engine in a 1.9 205 shell

I'm assuming I got no relies because there are a few other threads on this, so appologies for starting another. Anyway, just wanted to add my result in case anyone is interested. Cheers.

I finally got to looking at the air flow meter, I took it off and the car idled better without it but would obviously not rev. I took the lid off the AFM unit and cleaned the track inside with a cotton bud and alcohol then put it all back together. After refitting, problem solved.

Whilst it was off I noticed a little sensor inside the inlet side of the AFM which is quite black in colour. Just wondering if its worth cleaning this too or am I best leaving well alone? Thanks,

Jon.

I had some serious running and idle problems which after many hours led me to the afm. I completely stripped and dismantled the afm, cleaning every part thoroughly and adjusting the sensor. It now runs like a dream from cold and when warm and idles great.
