Fuel Pump Issue

Recommended Posts

kkronja

Hello all,

My car ('91 1.9gti cat motronic) has just refused to start this morning.

I have plenty of spark but I dont have any fuel coming to the injector rail-I've even tried and unplugged the outlet pipe directly from the top of the pump, but still nothing came out of it while cranking. When I removed the pump out of the tank, it does buzz and feels like its turning inside- it has me quite puzzled right now, does it have some diaphragm or something that is busted so it cant suck the fuel out?

hope someone can help me figure this out!!!

Thanks,

Ivan B.

Hi !

As usual in this cases , try with the fuel pump relay (it's inside the car under the dash next to the ECU , usually yellow or brown relay ...) and injection supply relay (this one is green and it's in the engine bay) .. check if they're working or test replace with some spare relays in known good working order ..

I've just replaced the pump (black one instead of yellow, and that needed a bit of fiddling with wiring), and VROOOM, all seems OK again.

The motor on the old one definitely works(when out of the tank and connected directly both make the same buzzing sound), but it obviously cant suck the fuel-I wonder if it can be repaired(so I can have another spare one)?

You may now find that your car struggles for fuel on roundabouts etc with lower amounts of fuel.

...well, actually it did do exactly that with the old yellow one (in fact the old yellow one died on me completely after a certain roundabout which I commute twice a day that has always caused a bit of surge if below third of tank)

after I fitted the black one(year '90. is stamped on its body) these problems seem to have dissappeared, and I've been trying it everyday on my roundabout, and this last easter weekend I've clocked at least 1400kms thru Hungarian steppe and Croatian mountain :) -it seems to work fine, so maybe the yellow one was not the right one for my tank, though the connector is apropriate.

But I still have the feeling the pump is struggling to get fuel pressure up while starting the car- I have to crank it in few bursts of couple seconds, before it springs to life(and after the car works quite nicely).

Can also the fuel pressure regulator be the cause of this  , or maybe only a clogged fuel filter...?

Even if its not the cause, if you have no history or knowledge of the fuel filter having been replaced then for what they cost I'd replace it anyway but don't forget the tiny copper washers on the banjo unions into the filter.

Fuel leaks in that area are a bad idea.

I've changed the filter yesterday, and it seems a bit better, but it still requires a bit of cranking effort- would it be adviseable to change also the fuel pressure regulator?

Today I've noticed that the water pipe branch that goes to oil heat exchanger is also leaking... what can i say, I love these cars, sometimes they feel like two-stroke bikes
