Clutch Issues

Recommended Posts

2052006

Running a gti6/vts clutch which is a "pull" type clutch. At Castle Coombe last weekend, after coming off track, I noticed the clutch pedal was slow to "return", ie. rise back up. I hadn't noticed any problem engaging or disengaging gears. Cleared up once car had cooled down, though clutch does seem a bit heavier now perhaps?

Any ideas what may cause this?

I know on 306 gti6s, the cable suffers due to heat from being run close to the exhaust and my cable does run very close to the manifold. Would this be the cause (never had it before and recently replaced the cable, so am doubtful)? Or am I looking at a problem with the actual clutch?

Pete

could of dried the grease out of the cable inner and outer causing slow return.

Yes, that was my first thought, though it is a new cable (oe) and I never had that problem with my old cable, which was years old (serves me right for changing it I suppose). I bought some heat shield material, so will try that round the cable, but just wondered if I'd missed something else obvious with these symptoms?

Any chance the cables touching the exhaust anywhere?

WP - I'm pretty sure I replaced one of the bushes when I fitted the engine a couple of years ago.

I am going to get it on the ramps tomorrow and have another look and fit some heat shielding round the cable. I have another trackday at Combe in a week or so, so I guess I'll be able to tell if my mods work...

Would a hot/sticky inner cable be enough to slow the rise of the pedal?

Turns out it was the cable after all. Removed it today and it was very stiff, inner would hardly pull through the outer and even after trying to lube it up a bit, it still wasn't very smooth.

In comparison, my old cable which I still had (and only changed as I knew it was quite old) was much better, so refitted that. Clutch pedal is massively lighter now.

Bit miffed as the new one was a genuine Pug one, from a dealer and only a few months old. Think I'll try taking it back.

you can always get an iffy part even from dealer, with these 205's getting on a bit there is no way of knowing how long the parts have been sat on a shelf somewhere.

defo take it back if under 12 months old pug will swap it for you as all parts are guaranteed for a period of 12 months (so long as you got receipt)
