No Boost :(

Driving along all was fine.. Then gave the car some gas when it was warmed up and no boost! Where do I start to find the problem. Has the turbo gone?? I'm lost where to start! The car smoked on idle but has always done that.

can you feel the intercooler pipes expanding when you rev it up? how easy is it to take the turbo compressor side pipes off? see if you can turn the impellar feely, and see if it spins when you rev it up... keep your fingers out the way when its running!

if the turbo does spool 'spin' when you rev it up, then work from there towards the inlet manifold.

it could be one of your pipes has blown off, or you have a large crack / hole in your intercooler e.t.c

When did you last change the oil? does it have an oil cooler fitted? and do you thrash it everywhere? as you may know turbo charged engines get the oil very hot when you are thrashing it, and if your oil cooler (if fitted) is pants then your oil gets very thin and your turbo mite as well be running dry

Thats what i would do anyway... see if the bearings are good, if it spools up when reving then work towards the inlet manifold, cheching everything is on and not damaged. its simple realy, turbo's are easy to work with mechanicaly.

I have checked all the boost pipes and the intercooler pipes are fine. Oil was changed about 4k ago and had to top it up a litre the other day. The intercooler is fine. So looks like I'm guna have to look at the turbo! I have noticed that the exhaust is louder? Why is that? Its all pop and banging a lot more, I assume that's the unburntt fuel not being used. When I rev the car the boost gauge will not go past 0. What should I check next?

how much louder has it got?

is the car slower? i.e is there no boost? (forget the gauge it may have broken!)

Its not a lot louder but noticably different. No boost at all, the guage works fine. The car is much slower!

Check the wastegate and actuator. If it is stuck open or the actuator rod is off then you won't get any boost.

Can anyone help. What I should look for? The car is louder than it used to be and there is a lot of smoke being burnt as I'm plodding along in 5th gear. Is it the turbo?

easy things to check and what i would do first take the ser clip off the actuator arm that is connected to the waste gate pull the arm off the waste gate. make sure the waste gate is easy to move then look at the hole in the actuator arm it has to be half a hole out (you have to pull the acuator arm on to the waste gate). When pulling the actuator it has to be quite stiff to check to see if the actuator is working take the vac hose off that goes to the boost solanoid then take the car out for a spin it should over boost dont do this to much or hard its not to good for the engine if it does over boost its not the waste gate or the actuator hope this helps.
