New Copper Brake Pipes

Recommended Posts

SurGie

Hi Member's,

I'm about to buy some new copper brake pipes for my VTS conversion and ill be using the braided pipes that Miles sells with the VTS calipers. Im also using the VTS master cylinder.

My question is whats the best copper brake pipe size to get for the set up im having ?

Is it, 3/16, 1/4 or 5/16 ?

Cheers :)

3/16" brake pipe and almost all the unions are 10x1 male (just base model rear drums, and 1.9 GTi rear brake compensators that differ) :)

Quick reply, thanks Anthony :)

Do you know how much ill need, iv seen on ebay that they sell 25ft rolls, would that be plenty enough ?

Cheers.

Annoyingly (is that a word!?) its right on border between two roles of 25ft lines! I'v chosen to run one line to the rear as per 1.6GTI set up and I bought two roles as it was cheap. I think you could get away with one if your careful and don't mess any up. I'v just (like 1/2 hour ago) finished running all my new lines with braided hoses! SNAP

25ft is easily enough on a 1.6 GTi (ie single front-rear line) but probably a bit short for a base model or 1.9 GTi (twin front-rear lines)

Surgie, if you do buy a roll and find its not enough, I have some offcuts of various lengths that you're more than welcome to for the price of a stamp.

Because the forum was SO slow, all i got was Internet explorer cannot show page when posting, i clicked back and lost my post

Thanks for the info guys :)

Thanks Daviewonder, i may need to take you up on that offer.

Also, whats peoples opinions about THIS type of copper/nickel brake pipes being stronger ?

Cupro Nickel is a lot more difficult to form to shape. Normal copper is fine and is what I use without problem.

10 x 1 male is what you need. Off the top of my head, you'll need 14 of them to do the whole car on a GTi.

The reason i ask is some look too long and some adverts dont advertise the full size of 10x 1mm, pictures dont always show if they look the same.

So do i need the short type like the ones on that ebay add ?

Its ok i just found out the length makes no difference because as long as the ends are tight against the seal inside the MS its fine.

Thanks :)

Off the top of my head I think you need 16 x M10 males (18 if keeping rear caliper flexis), 2 x M12 males, and 2 M10 females. I'm sure some one can comfirm this.

Price looks quite good!

Is this to do a 1.6 or 1.9 GTi mate ? and does it include the rear compensators?

cheers

Do you mean undoing them or to get at them ?

I use normfest from ECP to undue rusted bolts etc, its the best iv tried.

Drop the tank, don't have to take it out just the strap and two bolts, much better access.
