Help Required

Hello there everyone, I am in need of help with my 1990 1.9 205gti.

 

I searched for previous topics about my problem with no luck,

 

I had my car for 4 days and hit a very small bump and the engine cut out and refused to start again. It was turning but not wanting to actually start. I left it a few days and it started no bother and ran like a dream. A day or 2 later it refused to start again. I began to change a few things in the hope that i could fix the problem. However the car was still being stubborn and the problem continued.

 

I kind of gave up and left it for a few weeks. After that I turned the car over and drove it round the block every day for a few weeks with out fail. so decided to take it out and it cut out again. This time when i tried to start it again, it turned and started but died pretty much right away, sounded like it was bad fuel. Left it overnight and the next day it started and drove fine and has done the last few days. But i'm still not convinced that the problem is solved so not using it for work ect.

 

Please help as i'm totally lost now.

 

I have changed the following.

 

plugs

leads

dizzy

ignition coil

ignition module

fuel pressure regulator

fuel pump relay

air flow meter

starter

 

and i have checked that there is fuel getting to the engine, power to the fuel pump and spark at the plugs.

When it cuts out and then you try to restart it with no luck, did you try to wiggle all the engines wires a bit to see if there's some sort of loose connection ? As you have changed a lot of parts maybe you could have dislodged a wire or two ?

Worth checking the Lead from the Dizzy to the Ign amp, these quite often give issues now

I've went through what bits of wiring i can get to checking for loose connections.

 

Is the ignition amp the part on top of the inlet manifold?

No thats the coil, It will be either by the Fuel filter or on a plate in front of the header tank, Should be a Blue Bosch module, but the wire goes thru a 3 pin plug which are known to cause problems

I don't think the lead has been changed if it can be but I've made sure that it is connected to the dizzy and module are properly connected.

 

My friend has a 205 as well so I can get his lead to try it if it can be changed.

I had problems on my 1.9 engine back in 2005 with the wires that go to the coil that is on the inlet and wiggled them then it worked, give that a try also.

Thanks, i've got a new lead for the coil there so going to change that, went out to the car today and its running fine, but we'll see how long for this time. I also have a spare ecu that for the car. I'm not sure if this could be the fault. i've not been into the pugs that long, had to sell my impreza for something a bit cheaper to run so i'm still learning their common faults etc.

Hi folks. just to let you all know that my car has been running fine over the last week or so and i've been using it on a daily basis. i haven't changed anything since i last posted that it wasn't running so it looks like i have a self healing car.

In the past i have found the best way to locate a dodgy connection such as this is to wiggle the plugs/relays whilst the engine is running and see if it effects it/cuts out, rather than waiting for it to cut out then wiggling them and trying the starter and back and forth every time. At least this is how i found plenty of lovely dodgy bodge connections on mine.....and now, no more cutting out whilst on the move and restarting it at 60mph!
