What A Night!

Recommended Posts

What a night! A quick oil change on the Pug ended up being a few hours due to me putting a hole in the oil filter and not using the correct tool. After obtaining the correct tool, the job is now completed. I also manged to get dirty oil all over the place.

The lad I bought the car off a month ago said he had changed the oil, however it was really black. The car has only done 1000 miles since the last MOT, so I suspect it hasn't been changed in a while.

I also decided to replace the gear stick which some idiot had cut in half. It's now been replaced by an original stick and gear knob.

I feel that I have accomplised a lot tonight......

Cheers

I had the same problem on a friends turbo diesel 205, because of where the oil filter is you can't get a filter strap on it! So we spent about an hour hammering a screw driver though and moving it about 10mm at a time, some idiot had put it on stupidly tight <_<

Black oil is not a bad thing, it just means the oil is doing tis job (cleaning properties).

The oil will get black even after 1.000 km.

I had to jack the car up and get to it from the underneath using a removal chain. It worked a treat once I gripped it and a worth while £4.99 from Halfrauds.

I just looked too black compared to what I used to change, if that means anything. To be fair I haven't changed an oil filter since the other half had a Saxo over 3 years ago.

Ive always used a screwdriver but keep meaning to buy the correct tool.

Nothing worse than doing a job and having to go out and buy 1 tool. Then down the line, go and buy 1 more tool. I try to get tools before I need them, but still find theres tools I need that I don't have yet.

I'm not sure that I agree with that, atleast not on a well maintained petrol engine.

After 1000 miles odd, if the oil had been changed as claimed and the old oil properly drained, it should have still been a nice light golden colour. If it was black, either it hadn't been changed, the old oil hadn't been drained properly, or the engine is pretty gunged up inside from insufficient servicing.

Diesels on the other hand do blacken oil very quickly.

Surely not on most petrol engines?!

I've serviced many engines (many multiple times) and I've never seen the oil come out of the sump plug looking the same colour it went in - and I change my oil every 5000 miles most of the time! Closest I've seen was draining a little oil outof my GTI6 which I'd managed to overfill slightly, and while it was still transparent it was a lot darker, and that was after maybe ten miles, max!

Of course it will be darker after 5000 miles - it shouldn't be black after 1000 miles though*, atleast not in my experience!

(indeed, reading the OP suggests that it's not even done 1000 miles since the claimed oil change)

even if you carefully tighten a oil filter to the correct torque, theres a chance it will still be a pig to get off when the time comes, and for the turbo diesel the easiest way is by getting a large chisel and placing it on the ridges of the filter then carefully taping it round with a hammer until its lose enough to unscrew by hand.

as far as colour of oil goes it really depends on the car, the mileage and how well looked after it was

Ive always found oil goes dark straight away as you cant completly get rid of all the old oil in the engine.

...this is why a little smear of oil on the seal of the filter should always be done before fitting, then only turning about 3/4 of a turn once contact is made. After 1,000 miles I would still expect to see translucent oil, albeit a shade or two darker, depending on whether engine flush has been used or as Anthony says, past life iof the engine.

Are we (pointlessly) debating the colour as seen on the dipstick, or as seen when emptied in to a tray?

I presume that Ricky is talking about the colour of the oil on the dipstick - i.e. he'd not long bought the car, decided to check the level and upon seeing the black oil on the dipstick decided to do an oil change. If that's the case, then I certainly wouldn't expect to see black oil on a dipstick after such low mileage. All the cars I've ever had have maintained fairly light oil colour for a good few thousand miles and only shown black when really needing a change (like my 166 after I bought it). The colour of the oil when emptied is a different kettle of fish as your seeing it in greater volume, and in this case I've seen oil that looks light on the dipstick but a much darker brown when emptied, after maybe a couple of thousand miles, maybe less (yes I have done an oil change after such a short period). Think of it like polar bears - their hair is actually almost transparent, but in greater volume it makes them look white ;)

What about the bit around the arse that looks brown?

On the dipstick it would be honey coloured as GLPoomobile says but when it came out of the sump it would be dark brown / black-ish in all the cars I have had as far as I remember and this with regular oil changes between 3-4k miles.

Also when you are under the car and you see the oil flowing out of the sump there is no direct light hitting it so the oil will look darker than when checking it under sunlight.

I heard the comment about the oil colour in a car TV programme years ago.

I did an oil analysis in my Forester 6 months ago and although the oil coming out of the sump was very dark/black-ish it showed no contamination/metals/wear.

Dunno, I've never been up that close  Did you get bored harassing sheep?:lol:

I'll also just add that I used to empty my used oil in to clear 5 litre water bottles, and as I said above it would look dark brown/black (even under lighting, not in the shade under the car like Feb said  ) even after only a couple of thosand miles but would have looked quite light on the dipstick.

On the usual cars I work on currently, the oil goes in red, and comes out red...

Or does that not count because they are race cars?

Buy yourself a second set of oil filter remover tool. I had a chain before and it snapped etc, I now use a big set of plyer type grips. They take abuse but get into orchard places like on my sr20 Nissan.
