OH MY GOD I'M BORED!

Incredibly painful to watch if you know how a diff works!

Perhaps prior to watching, Cameron, you could have used some of your self-proclaimed genius to assess whether or not you as a budding race engineer would be the intended target for this video?

Fantastic clear explanation video, quite simple really.

But what makes a slip diff different, less or more slip ?

Does the full name "LIMITED slip differential" give you any clues?

I'm pretty sharp-tongued in real life - sometimes it creeps online.... :)

Easy Tom - it's a fair question from SurGie. This is an open differential NOT an limited-slip differential - there is no limit on the amount of slip. All the torque can be transmitted to one wheel ie get one wheel stuck in a muddy ditch and only that one will turn.

An LSD is a development of the open differential and uses a few methods of restricting the range and rate of torque transfer.

http://auto.howstuff...fferential4.htm - clutch type

http://auto.howstuff...fferential6.htm - locking and torsen

edited to say: these aren't any where near as clear explanations as the original 30s vid - just first ones on Google. Will try and find some better ones.

Thanks maturin23 :)

I understand it much better now and see what people meant when they want the LSD setting up the way they want it.

It was just a gentle nudge towards the answer coming from the name......

It is a good video because if you ever see a differential most people including myself can't begin to understand how a bunch of cogs can do that, but this video (saw the same one ages ago) is very good in the way it builds up from the basics to show how it works.

I'm sorry but that would be painful for me to watch even if I didn't know how it worked! :P

You've got one of those too, Cameron! We'd look fab together on a night out... ;)

Seriously though, it's quite obvious from other people's reaction on here and in the Youtube comments that it a pretty well done explanation of what seems at first glance to be a pretty arcane concept - as you clearly know it's very simple, but to many people it's literally a black box full of funny looking gears

Without wanting to sound like a pompous old fart (which I am, so it's not easy) not all these people will be as stupid as you think they are.

TBH i quite like how they use to talk back then, quite full of character compared to today's way of talking on educational films etc.
