The Aftermath Of Not Using Oil In Your Gearbox

Recommended Posts

Having seen some really odd things nothing surprises me anymore, But not seen this one for a while so a nice little picture of what happens when the Gearbox is left dry, well I drained a spray can lid full of oil out of the box if that count;s for anything

i need to check my oil in the box, sometimes is a bugger to get in gear . could this be a sign of low oil, my clutch is fine as i have just made adjustments to it.

Ouch my input shaft bearing is whining (ma box no suprize)

Changed the oil and it made it abit quieter also taking the magnetic bung out makes you realise how much crap floats around in there!

This reminds me, I need to check the oil in my hdi gearbox thanks to a leaking driveshaft oil seal.

Strange because I've never taken it out but it drips when warm & changes gear fine with no noises. :(

Yes, not enough oil or wrong spec of oil.

Best idea is to replace it with fresh stuff of the correct grade.

Graham.

I always wondered how bad the gearbox on my old 405 must have been internally after discovering that it had been run with no/minimal oil for atleast 10k miles :o

Certainly the synchros were dead on 2nd/3rd/4th and the input shaft rattled around in neutral like ball bearings in a cement mixer, but otherwise it just kept going and sounded fine when driving. The gearbox had been rough when I'd bought the car for peanuts and being a bargain bangernomics runaround for a few months, it didn't warrant actually spending any money on it, just drive it into the ground.

It was only when I eventually scrapped the car and removed the driveshaft that someone wanted that I discovered the lack of oil - certainly not a dribble came out when the driveshaft was removed, and I know that it hadn't leaked in the 10k miles that I'd done in it, and I've no idea how many miles the previous owner had done. I had a new found respect for the hardiness of BE gearboxes after that day :)
