Stupid Hydraulic Clutch

Recommended Posts

Can anybody shine some light on hydraulic clutches?

Ive been pissing about with mine for weeks now and still cant get it to work. So far all ive got is half a pedal (can start in gear and it doesnt move, but wont go into gear once the car is started).

Now the clutch in question is an ml5t one the same as in a 406 2.0 turbo and maybe v6 coupe, also c5 hdi's. Ive got it rigged up to my pedal box, on which ive tried a 0.625, 0.7, and 0.75 sized master cylinder to no avail.

HELP PLEASE :(

thanks

Have you tried bleeding the cylinder by putting the fluid in a syringe and putting it in from the bleed nipple?[reverse bleeding it] I have had some vehicles that needed to be blead that way to get a full pedal. It was the last thing tried and it worked for me.

unfortunately its a 406 d8 slave with no bleed nipple as it came from a sealed system. Im bleeding at the moment by disconnecting where the hose joins the slave and using temporary nipple in a pop bottle to fill the pipe and slave up. There is definately no air in the slave end of the system as ive bled it about 20 times using various methods, so the only thing i can think is that either a) the master cylinder has some air trapped in it, or b)the master cylinder is too small? however id have thought a 0.75" should be plenty big enough?

have you checked the size and stroke of the original cylinders? also the leverage ratio on the pedal?

lever ratio isnt a problem as i have the ability to go from rest all the way to full closed on the master cylinder so max travel at the pedal end.

I have not measured the original size, i dont have the original to measure tho.

Mine worked fine with 0.625 and now works even better with 0.750 cylinders, so that isn't your issue.

Do you want me to pop over so you can take a close look at my setup?

If you could mate yeah. Are you using the newer slave with metal pipework, or the older slave without any bleed nipple? i think this may be my problem.

That's not what I asked

The ratio compared to the original pedal, you might have the ability to move it all the way, but it'll feel quite crap if you have to push the pedal half way just to release the clutch (i.e if your ratio is too low)

Find a 406 and check, doesn't have to be a V6 as others used the ML.

the lever ratio wont matter at the moment though as the master cylinder is phsyically going from fully open to fully closed before the pedal runs out of travel. Even if the lever was changed itd have the same amount of travel on the master cylinder. Ive got a feeling the travel problem is on the master cylinder itself, obviously i need a £££ one that has a lot more travel and then some work to the bulkhead to allow it to fit.

just to let you know i managed to get my setup working by just extending the rod in the slave slightly. Feels sketchy so might go again so i think it needs some more testing. If it does go again ill be going to a similar setup to you tess.

cheers for coming around aswell mate
