Dying Seat Covers

I've been thinking about getting some gti seats for my car recently but someone suggested dying the covers instead.

I believe the seats in my car (Dturbo) are the same as the gti's but with not very nice brown/ purple covers like the ones in the Xs.

So my question is is can you dye them with normal fabric dye, and would it last and not make my trousers a funny color?

Anyone done it?
