[misc_work] White E Reg 1900 Restoration

Recommended Posts

lukesaddy

I bought this car as a donor car for my track project.

I gave £150 for it and got it picked up from london by a lad with a recovery wagon (bought it from looking at pics, dangerous i know)

History that i know of it;

Been owned by about 12 years by one lady in london, someone attempted to pinch it but stalled it against a fence due to lift up reverse. This means it has damage around the 2 door locks, a shabby front bumper, it has had a full brand new Valeo lock set including ignition barrel fitted though and had been garaged and not used for the past 10 years.

Spec;

1988 E reg

85,000 miles

Standard interior

Standard engine with k&n

Superchipped ECU

full stainless exhaust system

Koni adjustable suspension all round

Lowered slightly (20-40mm i believe)

4 good yoko tyres

Good boot floor

Paintwork is in good condition with only 1 crack and 1 bad bit of rot (usual places)

Bad bits;

Rot above rear 1/4 window

Bought as a non runner

Shabby front valance

Red piping is a bit poor

Bumpers are showing age

Wrong colour grill with no badge

Drivers seat bolster usual collapsed

Needs a proper petrol cap instead of chrome dimma one

Brakes are shot including all pipes

Plans;

Refurb the front and rear suspension

Freshsen up the engine with a good service

Respray the exterior

Make it a very tidy example and use as a summer daily and show car :)

Time for some pics;

Pics from the for sale add;

I got to the bottom of the non-starting problem.

I changed the fuel pump relay, cleaned the spark plugs and changed the fuel pump.

This cured it but the old dirty fuel in the tank made the pump poo its-self so i got another thats ready to be fitted.

I bought a pair of new bottom arms, drop links, strut top mounts and bearings and uprated bushes for the bottom arms and ARB mounts that are all ready to be fitted too :)

I jacked the car up and removed all the suspension bits 3 weeks ago.

20032011878.jpg?t=1302100692

I then got ill and ended up being in bed and hospital for 3 weeks so its been like this teasing me every time i come out of my front door :(

the worse pics there were from the lad i bought it off lol.

I dunno which ape made the strut brace but its useless, gets in the way of everything in the engine bay haha, it will be getting an OMP one before it gets on the road :)

What do I think? I think you're missing the point of a project thread - you're supposed to keep us entertained with updates, not ask us to bulk out the thread with replies :P

Now post some more updates, lazy arse :lol:

haha, i took your kick up the arse and went and removed the bushes from my brand new bottom arms (as fun as the blow torching was, it hurt to think id just paid shy of £50 each for them)

The uprated mounts from rallydesign are now in and they are ready to go back on the car with the other various parts.

Please tell me those were just pattern arms with crap bushes, and you haven't just burned out perfectly good OE quality bushes :blink:

they are motorquip ones, brand new just took them out of the bag to do that haha.

The way i see it, i can change the bushes to fast road ones now and run it for 2/3 times as long without having to think about them again :)

The bushes are cheap enough too - http://www.rallydesign.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=5113

Oh dear. Well it's a bit late now :(

Motaquip are the OE equivilant ones. Those bushes would have been good for years and thousands of miles. I have no idea about the Rally Design bushes, but Poly bushes are a bit of a mixed bag on 205s (from what's been widely reported over the years). Some are fit for purpose, but many fail unacceptably early. I hope you've been lucky, but I fear you may have just committed a bit of a FAIL moment :ph34r:

I bought the Motaquip arms so i could have the best quality ball joints so hopefully they will last a few years.

The Rally design bushes came recommended from a mechanic who i know, he uses them in the rally cars he builds and uses and says they are top quality ones. The ones ive fitted are a fast road compound (in black so they look standard, i think they call them classic design), ive been told they will last 2/3 times longer than the OEM ones, and will take a lot more punishment, i decided against the race compound ones as they are too harsh for a road car.

Only time will tell how long they last but from what ive heard they are very good bushes :)

Update time -

i finally got the front suspension back together, and the car back on all 4's - i cant describe how nice it was to see her sat on the floor again :D.

I have fitted the new better condition front valance to the front bumper and sorted the foglight wiring out because it was a mess.

I have wax-oiled the front headlight panels as the passenger side one is quite badly rotten :( hopefully it will hold out for a while.

New fuel pump is also fitted and the interior is nearly back together - i hope she starts when i get some fuel in it :).

Im hoping to have it on the road for before FCS 2011 and go down to the show in it :D.

To do list for MOT;

- Fit new CV boot

- Replace all copper brake pipes

- Get started again

- New wiper blades

- Re-fit front bumper

- Check over brakes (i know the pads are good all round, not sure if the calipers are all in full working order or not though)

Hopefully it will then pass an MOT, although it feels like the n/s bearing has collapsed in the back axle :(

Then it will be time to get the paintwork sorted out, tax then try to insure it :)

Im getting really excited as ive never drove one before, the closest thing is my old 1.6 106 XSi

Anyway, im going to have my pants pulled down by peugeot main dealer now for a few daft bits and bobs it needs

Pics will follow

Well, i went to the local pug main dealer, got 2 bottom pinch bolts and nuts, ordered a rear washer jet and a breather hose for between the FPR and inlet.

Tried to get a bumper mount bolt but they dont do them anymore so i found myself in a brilliant little local pug/cit parts shop, i took his last one off him for £3 !! im going to try get a mate to make me some up so i can sell them nice and cheap, if there was any interest.

I tried to get a price on a BE1 gearknob and a fuel filler cap from pug and the little shop but they both laughed me out :(

Anyway, prices;

breather hose - £16.33

pinch bolt - £2.68 each

locking nut - £0.68 each

rear washer jet - £5.08

T bolt for bumper - £3 (it was supposed to be £3.60ish + vat but he let me off :ph34r:)

Price on wheel bolts - £5ish each - hahaha not a chance im buying them !!

new rear brake pads - £11.50 (only bought them because my mate was gonna return them lol)

Pics time;

Old front valance -

I got a bit bored yesterday and decided to paint the wiper arms, front fog light surrounds and front badge off my 306 :)

20042011904.jpg?t=1303408151

I also bought a brake pipe cutting and flaring tool, brake pipe and some union's, so the brake pipes will be getting replaced this weekend hopefully :)

Also note the front arch clips (25p each + VAT from peugeot :( they had them shipped in from a dealer about 50 miles away so they must have made a loss on them haha)

20042011905.jpg?t=1303408151

And a cheeky pic of how she is looking now :)

Well, i think an update is long over-due.

Since i was last on, ive done plenty of jobs on her (some hard some easier, you know how it is)

1st up were brake pipes - all the old ones came off the car nice and easily with a pair of wire snips and a 1/4" socket :) i made up all the pipes one at a time, slid them all into place (more of a struggle with the over the tank ones :/) I went to put some fluid in and found that i had a few leaks, after a few attempts it seemed my tool was at fault, so i got it replaced and tried again still to no avail, so i took the safer route and got a mechanic friend to help me out (its all about safety at the end of the day with brakes). Brakes are all now bled up and feel sweet, awaiting the road test - i also fitted new front discs as mine were shot :)

2nd to come was the rotten rear 1/4 panel, i scraped out all the body filler, sanded it back then flashed it over with some etch primer, white primer and halfrauds alpine white paint, im not going to lie - it looks an absolute clip so ill not be getting any pics of that haha. Fundementally though, it wont rust there anymore :)

Next up was inner CV boot, i removed the shaft, remembered how much of a nightmare they are so im going to my mates tomorrow and he is sliding the boot on for me then i can re-fit the shaft.

I went for a start up yesterday and found that it just wouldnt fire (even with fuel in haha) My mechanic friend went through a few things and diagnosed the distributor to be at fault (no pulse at the injector plugs). So today i borrowed his spare distributor and gave it a test, plugged it into the loom, gave the end a spin and heard the spark and injectors - brilliant !! I whipped the old distributor off and found it to be covered in loc-tite and full of oil.

This found me at peugeot buying a new camshaft oilseal which will be fitted this weekend. Undeterred though i fitted the new distributor and went for a start, first turn and she fired but cut straight out :(, after about 2 seconds of fault finding i realised i hadnt plugged the AFM back in :huh: 2nd attempt - fired and stayed on F*CKI BRILLIANT !!! i couldnt wipe the smile off my face, after seeing it sat on axle stands outside my house for the past 2 months or so it was the best feeling ever to hear her running again - the idle is a bit high at about 1800 revs but she revs well and idles smooth-ish :).

New to-do list;

-CV boot on and driveshaft back together,

-camshaft oil seal,

-put in fresh anti-freeze / coolant then bleed system through,

-get it off the axle stands and back on 4 wheels,

-have a road test to make sure everything is as-should be,

-send it for MOT

once its through an MOT;

-get a full machine polish and valet done on her

-tax her

-insure her then have some summer fun :D - cant bloody wait :ph34r:

pics will follow :D

Well its been a long time since i last updated this thread,

It passed its MOT back in may after getting a nice fail list;

-Nearside front headlamp aim too low

-Offside front headlamp aim too low

-Offside front position lamps not working

-Offside front windscreen washer provides insufficient washer liquid

-Nearside rear bonded suspension unit bonding failed and part of unit is likely to become displaced

The last one meaning the trailing arm was seized solid!

After the back axle was re-built with all new bearings it sailed through the test :D

1 week later and about 200 miles and the head gasket went.

I only put my foot down in it once because it had a slight hesitance and mis-fire, the one time i did it left a big cloud of smoke and oil and water on the road behind me !

After inspection the block was cracked too so i hadto get on the hunt for a new engine :'(

I decided to not take the risk and do head gasket, cambelt and water pump on the new engine before it went into the car, as well as tarting it up a bit

Went to start it up and it wouldnt fire,

after a week non stop trying different things i surrendered and sent it to JBMsport - local peugeot / citroen specialists

Turns out the engine i bought had bent valves - NOT a happy bunny when i was assured it was a good runner !

It now has a better engine;

Engine spec;

1.9 GTi

-flat top pistons (late bottom end)

-skinny combustion chamber (early head)

-skinny headgasket

-head ported and polished, gasflowed

-standard cam

Basically just a high comp standard GTi engine - should be nice and reliable for track duties :)
