Warning Lights

Recommended Posts

I have recently brough a 205 rallye 1.5. Driving home last night and all of a sudden 3 warning light come on temp, oil and STOP. Checked the rad and the piping, the rad was cold and there was no presure in the piping. I am thinking that the water pump may have died or somethign along those lines.

Any ideas?

If all three lights were on - STOP, low oil pressure, and high coolant temp, that points at low oil pressure.

High coolant temperature illuminates just the STOP and high coolant temp light. The oil pressure light does (should) not come on.

(PS 205 1.4 Rallye engine is a TU rather than XU, so I've moved this to the correct section)

How long or far had you been driving? Was this just a short trip?

Hmmmm - I'd have expected the thermostat to open during that trip so the radiator should be getting hot. Squeezing the radiator top hose should cause the coolant to be displaceed into the header tank. Can you see any coolant in the header tank?

How's your oil level looking?

Once i got home yesterday i decided to go out and buy a new thermastat and water pump fitted the new themastat, started it up the lights seem to flicker but only on idle. There is coolant in the expansion tank, but it seems that the rad is staying cold but the rest is not. How hard would you say it is to fit a new water pump?

Oil level is all topped up I did this when I got the car about a week ago. It has not dropped at all since this happening so I am confused to why the low oil pressure light still flickers on at the same time as the others on idle.

The fact that the oil light also came on with the water and stop lights suggests lubrication problems. Poor lubrication will lead to overheating.

If you say the oil pressure light flickers, then you need to take the car to a garage and investigate. I wouldn't use the car or start the engine until I checked that the oil pressure was fine.

May also be an electrical problem and the two wires touching an earth or the engine, but you really need to be sure the oil pressure is fine before assuming it's an electrical problem because it isn't worth the risk.
