1500 Rpm Idle Problem

Recommended Posts

STEVEBOXER

Hi,i have purchased a 1.9 gti which im pleased with apart from when you start it.

I pump the throttle a few times(from cold)and it starts but cuts out straight away,if i start it and hold throttle down for a few seconds it will tickover ok but at 1500rpm although this is constant,no up and down.

When i flick throttle as if to turn auto choke off it will come down to 1200rpm for a split second and shoot straight back up to 1500rpm,it will idle at 1500 if engine is hot or cold.

I have serviced it,oil/filter,air filter and plugs.I have cleaned butterfly throttle and checked for air leaks.

I was thinking of adjusting the hmmm idle screw?

I have bought a second hand sad valve,is this also known as the coolant temp valve?

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks

steve

Ps Does anyone recognize it,it has the forum stickers on quarter windows(H792CRT)

Sounds like an air leak.

One spot that's easy to miss is where the oil filler pot is bolted to the inlet. The bolt that holds it on goes right into the manifold, leaving a hole if the bolt is missing.

Thanks

I forget which one it is off the top of my head, but it's one of these two:

Is it a red 1900, if so it used to belong to a guy called James from Doncaster, I did a lot of work on it for him about 18 months ago, fully rebuilt the engine, rebuilt the beam, various other jobs on the suspension and brakes.

Hi,yeah thats the one.

I just had new standard exhaust(downpipe to back)and new ashley back box,2 new yokohama paradas on the front and had the rust below n/s sill sorted.I have receipts for thousands inc £1800 from L.A.D Motorsport for engine work, seems no expense spent on this pug!

I noticed new shocks on back, beam is tip top,new engine mounts etc and EBC Greenstuff all round, which despite them being slated buy everyone i find them pretty good!

Hmmm back on topic, checked and both bolts are in inlet manifold so i have adjusted the idle screw and brought tickover down,i am wandering if someone had turned it up to compensate as i found a hole in pipe from afm which i have now fixed.

Most cars I've been in with LAD engines are absolute fliers.get a bit of bad press(like a few companies) but do a hell of a lot of competition engines

Yes I'm James, I sold it to someone from Liverpool for £1200 in July last year (I owned it for about 2 and a half years). Tom Fenton did loads of work on the car for me.

Was a great car while I had it.

PM me if you want to know anything else about it.

Hi,has anyone ever tried to take sad valve off the water temp housing.I have never done it before(being a vauxhall astra gte man)and found it to be bloody frustrating with hidden bolts etc lol.

After scraping my knuckles i decided to clean sad valve with petrol,i submerged the sad valve in petrol overnight and then i could see loads of hmmm crap in the container.I then lubricated with WD40 and amazingly the bloody thing now works as it should.

Started her from cold and revs were a little higher than when engine hot and as i nailed her down the road there was no more flat spot or kangarroing :D.

I stopped in traffic alot and revs were steady and it didnt want to die on me until engine warmed up.Then when engine was up to temp all was still well and she it was a pleasure to drive her,no hesitation, flat spot or kangarooing just nice and smooth and drove much, much better B)

Ps You will be surprised what you have to take off to get at the bloody thing lol.
