Dads Selling His Phase 1 Gti

Recommended Posts

Hey all!

Just a quick one, my dad wants to sell his phase 1 gti and needs advice on the price.

Briefly the car is D reg, phase 1, unmollested, shell is the best we've seen (and we've had 7 gti's between us), seats are best ive seen too with the bolsters almost perfect, around 80k miles done, 12 months mot, very tidy car, only problem is the dash around the glove box area is broken, and havent been able to find a replacement yet.

He was thinking of advertising it at £1000, but to me that seems very low, given its age and condition. I think I saw a phase 1 advertised on here for £2500 a few weeks back, which to me seemed high, but Im unsure as I havent really been keeping an eye on what the going price is nowa days!

This pic is a couple of years old, but hasnt done much millage since then as it's been garaged for well over a year.

Anyway, any advice much appreciated!

Deano!

I assume that it's a 1.9 by the wheels and seats?

If so, £1000 certainly very much on the low side if it's as good as you say, but it does depend on how desperately he needs it gone, as the market does seem quite slow at the moment.

I'd guess that something in the £1750-2000 ballpark would be about right as a starting point for a tidy, low mileage unmolested Phase 1 1.9 GTi, but I wouldn't expect it to sell within a week at that price

Cheers for your reply Anthony. Yes it's a 1.9, half leathers, etc.

Just like my phase 1.

I agree with Anthony. Providing it hasn't had 450 previous owners and it has mot's etc to back up mileage and some service history etc etc.

if its rot free and as good as you say, id get it stuck up for closer to the £2000 mark, worth a punt, might be easy extra money for you :)

it all depends on number of owners and if the mileage can be proven ie old MOT's and service history like mentioned above it could make a big difference it the price in my veiw.

Number of owners means nothing on a car this old, but the history and its condition, and originality counts for a lot.

Get the keys, give it a damn good clean, stick the bits of dash you have back together, stick it up for £2k, but not on here

I agree that overall condition is more relevant than number of owners and mileage at this age, but I don't agree that number of owners is totally irrelevant.

If anything, a car of this age only having a few owners is a very positive thing. It's a mentality of course, but for me it gives the impression that the car has been loved, cared for, and looked after. Hence the premium for below average mileage cars that have had only 1 or 2 owners. If a car has had 10 owners, you have to ask why. What is wrong with it? What has been wrong with it? How much abuse has it had? How much bodgery has been inflicted?

An original ph1, below average miles, low owners, plenty of mot and taxed, has got to be worth £2k of anybody's money all day long. So long as it's clean too and isn't needing any extra money spent.

I dont think there are that many D-reg 1.9s kicking about so £2k sounds a good price to try first.

For my curiosity...When was it registered?

Amazing how things have changed, my first GTi was one of the very first 1.9's, D reg in white non sunroof. 3 owners and the one before me had it 13 years. It had MOT and tax (albeit naff all) and was solid but rear beam had seized. All standard. Paid £270 for it and that was 2003.

Id say £1k is cheap. £2k it would need tarting up a bit but otherwise to the right person itd be a steal.

....wish I could have a barn and the disposable income in 2003 to go buy up a large collection of cheap GTis... would nearly be quids in now and I guess its only going to get better.

No it's still parked up, looks like it might become a track car project now if we can find a decent engine locally.
