Steering Rack Free Play

Recommended Posts

Just a bit of advice required, took the car for the mot and the advisory said " free play in steering rack offside" the question is are steering racks re-buildable to cure the problem? Or do i just look for a replacement

Hi Bill

You need to have a look where the play is, it might just be the track rod itself which can be replaced quite easily. This is the bar that the track rod end screws into, and it has a ball type joint at the inner end where it attaches to the rack. The track rods were about £12 last time I bought one, available from any decent motor factor.

Regards Tom

Thanks Tom , new track rod ordered (£14 partco) i`ll pick it up and fit it next time i`m home, i`m confident it`ll cure it as the free play is inboard on one side
