Exhaust Blowing......

Recommended Posts

RickyD

Good Afternoon All,

My exhaust is seriously blowing and the MOT is due is 3 Weeks time.

Of what I can see the back box and centre section are Magnex. It is blowing where the centre/front pipe meets the down pipe. It has holes in it.

I haven't got a clue if the 4 branch manifold/downpipe are standard or not. They are not stainless.

What are my best options everyone? Is the downpipe/manifold one piece on a 91 H plate non-cat 1.9 GTI?

Can the holes be welded or would a replacement down pipe/manifold be better?

I will give one of my mates friend a call who owns a garage to see if anything can be done without buying new parts.

Your comments would be appreciated.

Cheers

on my standard 8v set up the front and centre pipe are one piece and are connected to manifold by 2 bolts with springs on and sealed with a cone washer.

sounds to me like you need new centre and rear section, not worth trying to weld you will end up just blasting straight through it.

Thanks for your comments smithy.

I've booked the car in at my other mates mates garage who I know quite well. The car will be dropped off tonight to investigate what can be done with the blowing exhaust and he will MOT it also. It's due on the 25th April, so he might as well kill two birds with one stone.

Cheers

Sounds like a replacement middle section is needed. No point in repairing as it will only start blowing again a few miles down the road.

Cheers Lewis,

I dropped the car off after work. Hopefully he will be able to look at it tomorrow.

I will hunt around and see what the prices are for the middle section. I suppose I could put a standard one back on and still have the Magnex backbox on.

Best Regards

Well my 1.9 passed it's MOT today. It can relax now and have some fun for the next 6 months in the fine weather. The manifold has been welded, however it's been advised that I should look for a replacement at some stage as it will not last forever.

Cheers
